Sugarcane farmers in various localities throughout the province are entering the harvest season for the 2024-2025 crop year. This year, sugarcane continues to be purchased at high prices, so farmers are enthusiastic and confident in expanding their planting area.
Sugarcane is being purchased at high prices.
After the Lunar New Year holiday of the Year of the Snake (2015), from the 6th day of the first lunar month, sugarcane farmers in various localities returned to harvesting sugarcane to sell to factories and traders. Observations in the growing regions show that this year's sugarcane crop, thanks to favorable weather conditions, has yielded quite high productivity in many areas, from 70 tons/ha or more. Some areas where sugarcane was grown using ratooning techniques for the first year, employing drip irrigation technology, even achieved yields of nearly 90 tons/ha.
Not only is sugarcane yielding stable productivity, but it is also currently being purchased at high prices by sugar factories in the province. While last year, sugarcane with a CCS (10 Brix) was purchased at 1.3 million VND/ton, this year the price is 1.35 million VND/ton. Sugarcane with a CCS exceeding 10 Brix will be priced even higher based on a coefficient.
Having just finished harvesting over 4 hectares of his family's sugarcane fields, Mr. Le Trung Quan from Ea Ly commune (Song Hinh district) said: "Because the sugarcane fields were cared for, fertilized, and pest and disease controlled according to the instructions of Tuy Hoa Sugarcane Company, even though it's the third year of ratooning, the sugarcane still developed well and achieved stable sugar content. This year, the purchase price of sugarcane is high, and the company also provided a machine to load the sugarcane onto trucks, saving 50% of the cost of hiring laborers. Thanks to this, we are all happy because we have a high income to cover expenses and reinvest in the new season."
Sharing the joy from sugarcane, Mr. Y Luc from Suoi Bac commune (Son Hoa district) shared: "This year, I planted over 2 hectares of sugarcane, with a yield of over 75 tons/hectare, a 10% increase compared to last year. The harvested sugarcane reached 10 Brix, so it was purchased at the field for 1.35 million VND/ton, and for every additional 0.1 CCS increase, I received an extra 12,500 VND. After deducting the costs of fertilizer and labor, my family earned a profit of over 100 million VND."
Helping farmers feel secure in growing sugarcane.
In Son Hoa district, in recent years, thanks to investment and support policies from sugar companies and local authorities, people have boldly applied new farming methods and techniques to cultivate high-yield sugarcane varieties such as KK3, KK88-92, K83-29, etc.
Mr. Le Van Quy, Chairman of the Son Hoa District People's Committee, said: The district is focusing on supporting people to continue expanding sugarcane cultivation in suitable areas, ensuring both high yields and convenient harvesting; at the same time, connecting with sugar factories to ensure farmers have a secure market for their produce. Currently, some growing areas are entering the sugarcane harvest season, with high purchase prices (1,200-1,350 VND/kg). It is estimated that this year, sugarcane farmers in the district will earn between 55-70 million VND/ha.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in recent years, people in localities throughout the province have maintained a stable sugarcane planting area of 24,000-26,000 hectares per year. This year alone, they planted over 29,000 hectares. This is due to stable sugarcane yields and higher sugarcane prices each year, leading many households to expand their planting area. In addition, local sugarcane purchasing factories are focusing on connecting with farmers to ensure post-harvest sales. Some households have even received advances from factories to cover investment costs, expand production areas, and receive training in new farming techniques.
A representative from KCP Vietnam Industrial Co., Ltd. stated that the company currently purchases sugarcane at a price of 1.35 million VND per ton for sugarcane with 10 Brix, and an additional 125,000 VND per ton for sugarcane with 11 Brix. The company provides interest-free loans of over 500 billion VND to farmers for sugarcane cultivation on 7,000 hectares. Furthermore, the company spends approximately 60 billion VND annually to assist farmers with land preparation for sugarcane planting.
Meanwhile, the leaders of Tuy Hoa Sugar Corporation shared that the company is currently purchasing sugarcane from local farmers. To reassure farmers about sugarcane cultivation, this year the company has signed direct investment and purchase contracts with nearly 2,000 sugarcane-growing households, with a total investment of nearly 100 billion VND for the company's raw material area. In the upcoming 2025-2026 sugarcane season, the company will continue to implement various investment and support policies for developing the sugarcane raw material area, including: land preparation costs, seed and fertilizer purchases, cultivation techniques, transportation costs, contract completion bonuses, and incentives for increased production.
In addition, the company also provides a price guarantee of 900,000 VND per ton of clean sugarcane with 10 Brix sugar content at the farm for local households. Thanks to this, many farmers have established long-term partnerships with the company in the production-consumption chain, gradually increasing the value of their products and boosting their income.
| According to the Phu Yen Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in the 2024-2025 crop year, the province planted 29,115 hectares of sugarcane, with nearly 10,000 hectares currently harvested in Son Hoa, Song Hinh, Dong Xuan, and Phu Hoa districts. Compared to the previous crop year, the sugarcane area in this year increased by 4,275 hectares. The plan for the 2025-2026 sugarcane crop year is to plant 28,000 hectares, with more than 1,500 hectares already newly planted. |
