Microsoft Launches New Web App Store for Windows

The new web version of the Microsoft Store has been rebuilt from the ground up, ditching the old React codebase and replacing it with a more modern technology base. Shoelace, Lit, Vite, and a C# ASPNET backend were used to create the new web interface.

“The old site was built on React and used an outdated UI framework,” says Judah Gabriel, an engineer at Microsoft. “We’ve created a new user experience with a specially designed interface, a new way to find apps, and a modern set of web technologies. I hope people find it useful.”

This new web store makes it easier for users to find Windows apps and Xbox PC games. Users can download them from the main Microsoft Store app on Windows. However, it's worth noting that this web version doesn't replace the main Microsoft Store app on Windows; instead, it works alongside it.

The launch of this new web app store could mark Microsoft's preparations to expand its catalog of apps and games beyond the Windows operating system. Microsoft's Xbox chief Phil Spencer has revealed that they are building an Xbox mobile games store, and it is expected to launch in 2024, especially thanks to the support of the European Union's Digital Markets Act. This requires an online presence via a web interface to optimize search and social sharing.
