A typical example is Mr. Nong Thanh Khoa's family in Khuon Puc village, who has been cultivating about 2 hectares of watermelon for many years. Mr. Khoa started planting in February and began harvesting in less than 3 months. This year's watermelon crop was particularly favorable thanks to good weather, no rain during the flowering period, so the plants bore fruit evenly.
The average melon weighs from 2 to 4 kg, with a few small ones, some weighing up to 5 to 6 kg. The estimated yield for the entire crop is about 15 tons. With a stable selling price of 8,000 VND/kg, his family can earn about 120 million VND - an impressive figure from a short-term crop.
Mr. Khoa shared: "This year is the 5th year my family has grown watermelon. The weather is favorable so the watermelons are beautiful, sweet and have few pests. Compared to previous years, this crop will bring higher income."
Right next to it is the melon field of Mr. Hoang Van Tuyen's family, the family's watermelon growing area is 1.5 acres and he is one of the earliest melon growers in Minh Tien with more than 10 years of experience.
Thanks to having 4 workers in the family, he does not have to hire outside workers. The investment cost for a melon crop is only about 17 million VND, including: seeds, plastic bags to cover the soil and fertilizer.
With good productivity and selling price, Mr. Tuyen expects to earn about 100 million VND in this crop. This is a significant profit compared to many other traditional crops.
Mr. Tuyen said: "Since switching to watermelon, I have seen clear economic efficiency, many times higher than other crops."
The entire melon growing area of Minh Tien commune is deployed on reclaimed land - a place with sandy soil, rich in alluvium, very suitable for the development of watermelon. On average, the whole commune grows about 30 hectares per year.
People of Minh Tien commune harvest melons.
However, this year, due to the slow receding of the lake water level, the planting area has decreased to about 10 hectares, mainly concentrated in villages such as Khuong Puc, Lang Sao... However, thanks to favorable weather and proactive pest and disease control such as green worms, leaf rollers and fungi, the yield and quality of watermelons are still guaranteed.
Notably, Minh Tien commune has now established two watermelon growing cooperatives, each attracting more than 20 households to participate. This is an important premise for watermelon growers to connect and support each other in terms of techniques, product consumption, improve production efficiency and gradually build the Minh Tien watermelon brand in the market.
Chairman of the Commune People's Committee - Hoang Van Canh said: "Taking advantage of land along rivers, streams and Thac Ba lake, many households in the area have grown watermelon. This year, the weather is favorable, promising to bring a bumper crop to farmers. Therefore, the commune is promoting and mobilizing people to grow this crop in the coming time to increase the efficiency of agricultural production."
