The fishing village of Rach Vem is about 25km from the center of Duong Dong. A new day in Rach Vem begins quite early. Even before the sun sets, the scene in the fishing village is bustling. Small boats laden with shrimp and fish return one after another after a long night at sea. The sputtering of boat engines, the calls to each other, and the gentle lapping of the waves create a peaceful symphony of everyday life characteristic of this coastal region. Mr. Nguyen Van Tu, a local fisherman, has spent almost his entire life at sea. His small boat, just docked, is full of fresh fish, crabs, and squid. Mr. Tu says, "This job is tough, but I'm used to it. If the sea is kind, it gives us a lot; if it's too rough, we take a few days off."
On the shore, the buying and selling activities of the locals unfolded quickly. Women busily sorted seafood, their laughter and chatter dispelling the early morning silence. As the sunrise painted the water golden, the entire fishing village awakened. Far out at sea, the floating houses bobbed gently with each wave, resembling a poetic seascape.
Around 9 a.m., as the sun rises higher, Rach Vem beach begins to welcome its first visitors. Interestingly, most people come to Rach Vem to see the thousands of starfish that congregate there. According to locals, the period from November to April is the ideal time to explore Rach Vem. During this season, starfish flock to Rach Vem in large numbers, allowing tourists to enjoy observing and taking beautiful photos with these echinoderms. "Rach Vem is adjacent to Ham Rong Cape and boasts a white sand beach, clear blue water, a shallow, gentle slope, and is safe, making it suitable for water activities," shared Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thuy, the owner of a floating house in Rach Vem.
At lunchtime, tourists recharge their energy with seafood dishes such as steamed crab, sea urchin sashimi, grilled grouper, grilled squid with eggs, and sour seafood hotpot… Ms. Huynh Ngan, a tourist from Can Tho City, said: “Sitting on the floating house, dipping my feet into the cool water, listening to the gentle sound of the waves, all the worries of life seem to disappear.”
After lunch, visitors can relax in hammocks on the floating houses while listening to the "sea sing," read a book, or simply admire the ocean.
The sun slowly sets over the sea, painting the sky orange and reflecting on the sparkling water. Long shadows of people and boats stretch across the sand, creating a dreamy, intimate scene. A day spent exploring Rach Vem fishing village is simply about walking, observing, listening, and feeling. But it is precisely this simplicity that makes it a special stop on any journey to discover Phu Quoc Island.
