August 19th is known for two significant events in Vietnamese history. Firstly, it commemorates the victory of the August Revolution of 1945, ushering in an era of independence and freedom for the nation. Secondly, it is also the Traditional Day of the Vietnam People's Public Security Force, who have always been at the forefront of the mission to protect national security.
According to the Law on the People's Public Security Force, signed into law by the President on December 12, 2005, August 19th officially became the Traditional Day of the People's Public Security Force and the "National Day for Protecting National Security". This is not only an occasion to honor the silent achievements of the police force but also to remind every citizen of their shared responsibility in maintaining national order and security.
Going back in time to 1945, Vietnam was then under the yoke of French colonialism and Japanese fascism. The lives of the people were extremely miserable under the brutal exploitation of the colonial-feudal regime.
But it was precisely during that dark period that the fighting spirit of the Vietnamese people surged forth powerfully.
In August 1945, as World War II drew to a close, the revolutionary opportunity arose. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam , the army and people throughout the country united to prepare for the General Uprising.
From August 13th to 17th, 1945, the Party's central organs continuously met and issued orders for a nationwide uprising.
On the morning of August 19, 1945, tens of thousands of Hanoi residents flocked to the Grand Theatre Square to participate in a rally and demonstration. Under the protection of the Youth Self-Defense Force, the show of force was successful, laying the groundwork for the victory of the August Revolution.
On that very day, our army and people took control of Hanoi, marking the beginning of a wave of uprisings that spread throughout the country.
Around this time, the precursor organizations of the People's Public Security Force were formed. In the North, there was the Department of Security; in the Central region, the Department of Intelligence; and in the South, the National Self-Defense Force.
Despite having different names, they all share the common mission of protecting security and order, contributing to the victory of the revolution. Therefore, August 19th has been chosen as the Traditional Day of the Vietnam People's Public Security Force.
August 19th is not only a historical milestone, but also a symbol of the indomitable fighting spirit and unwavering will of the Vietnamese people. The victory of the August Revolution ended more than 80 years of French colonial rule, abolished the feudal regime, and gave birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam – the first workers' and peasants' state in Southeast Asia.
Furthermore, this day is also an occasion to honor the immense contributions of the People's Public Security Force. From the early days of hardship to the present, they have always been the core force in protecting national security, combating crime, and maintaining social order. Their silent sacrifices have made a significant contribution to the stability and development of the country.
Every year, on August 19th, the Vietnamese people come together to recall the glorious traditions of the nation and pay tribute to the heroes who fell for independence and freedom. This is also an opportunity for the younger generation to better understand history, thereby continuing to promote patriotism and build and protect the Fatherland in the new era.
August 19th will forever remain a glorious milestone in the nation's history, reminding each of us of the value of peace, independence, and the responsibility of every citizen in the cause of national development.
