Cole Palmer has often laughed off rumors linking him to Manchester United. “It makes me laugh,” he said at a press conference two weeks ago, as a way to quell speculation about his future.
But at Old Trafford, the story doesn't end there. According to numerous sources from Europe, the Manchester United leadership is "obsessed" with the Chelsea attacking midfielder. They are ready to break the transfer record to bring the 23-year-old in to be the centerpiece of their rebuilding project.
Palmer is currently one of the few bright spots in the Chelsea squad this season. With the team struggling and virtually no chance of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, his role has become even more prominent.
However, the advantage is entirely with Chelsea. Palmer has a contract until 2033 and is considered "untouchable". The minimum price the Stamford Bridge club is considering is 150 million euros, a figure equal to Alexander Isak's transfer to Liverpool last summer.
In other words, if MU wants Palmer, they have to break the record. And even if they manage to do that, the door might not open.
The biggest problem isn't the money, but the player himself. Palmer has stated he has no intention of leaving Chelsea. That statement has led many to believe that the deal is unlikely to materialize.
However, some sources suggest that the English midfielder was unhappy in London and missed Manchester, where he grew up. Initial contacts between MU and Palmer's representatives therefore had already surfaced.
At Old Trafford, the situation is clear: if Palmer gives the nod, things will move forward immediately. Manchester United now have the opportunity to return to the Champions League after a two-season absence, which means more financial resources to fuel their transfer ambitions.
The summer transfer window is still long, but one scenario is already clear: if Palmer changes his stance, this could become the most talked-about and widely discussed deal of summer 2026.
