Pre-summer lessons
After class, the playground of Mui Ne 3 Primary School (Mui Ne Ward) became more lively than usual with a water safety and drowning prevention skills training activity for students. Many little hands were continuously raised, eager to participate in the practice, making the awareness session exciting.
A highlight of the activity was that students not only received information but also directly handled simulated situations such as calling for rescue, assisting those in distress, and remaining calm when facing danger themselves. Dang Ngo Hai Van, a student in class 5B, shared: “Before, I thought drowning was something far beyond our reach, but after today's experience, I understand that accidents can happen at any time if we are careless. I learned how to wear a life jacket correctly, how to throw a lifebuoy to save someone, and that when encountering someone drowning, we must remain calm and call for adult assistance, not jump in to rescue them if we don't know how to swim. I find this a very meaningful and beneficial lesson.”
Mui Ne is a coastal area, and equipping students with water safety skills before the summer break is considered a crucial aspect of school education. Mr. Pham Thai Huy, Principal of Mui Ne 3 Primary School, stated: “The school wants students not only to excel academically but also to possess self-protection skills. This is very important as they enter the summer with many outdoor activities.”
Not only at Mui Ne 3 Primary School, but also at Bac Binh Ethnic Boarding School (Bac Binh commune), students participated in short plays about preventing summer accidents and injuries. Familiar situations such as going swimming in streams, dangerous climbing, or unsafe play were reenacted in a relatable way, making it easier for students to understand.
To ensure students have a safe summer
In reality, summer remains a time of great anxiety for many parents. In many families, parents still have to work while their children have too much free time. Many students spend most of their holidays on their phones, playing video games, or gathering to play without adult supervision. Ms. Huynh Trang, a parent in Ham Thang ward, shared: “Summer vacation is the time parents worry the most. We worry about our children playing near rivers and streams, about accidents, and also about them being glued to their phones all day.”
The provincial education sector has identified life skills education as a crucial task to help students develop comprehensively. Therefore, experiential activities and practical skills education are increasingly being emphasized in schools.
Before the summer break, many schools also intensified their efforts to raise awareness about traffic safety, preventing and combating school violence, preventing child abuse, and promoting civilized behavior online. Accordingly, life skills education activities were organized in various lively forms such as dramatizations, first aid practice, and safety skills instruction. These activities are contributing to the formation of self-protection habits in students, enabling them to behave appropriately and be more proactive in life.
A truly meaningful summer is not just a time off from school, but also an opportunity for children to experience, learn, and grow. Life skills lessons before summer may seem small, but sometimes they can help children avoid major accidents. And behind each of these activities lies the simple wish of teachers and parents: for every child to have a truly safe summer.
