Durian season

Báo Bình ThuậnBáo Bình Thuận16/07/2023

Just a few ripe durians are enough to make the strong aroma of durian spread throughout the region. This season, when you go to Da Mi, Ham Thuan Bac or to Ta Pua in Tanh Linh, Duc Linh, you just need to walk on the street to smell the durian…

In Binh Thuan, there are currently 3 typical areas that can grow durian with high quality fruit for export: Ham Thuan Bac, Tanh Linh, Duc Linh. The whole province is estimated to have about 2,500 hectares of durian, of which nearly 2,000 hectares are in harvest time with a yield of 10 - 16 tons/ha. The largest durian growing areas are the 4 highland communes of Ham Thuan Bac, Da Mi, Dong Giang, Dong Tien, La Da, estimated at over 1,000 hectares. The remaining communes from La Ngau to Duc Phu (Tanh Linh) and Me Pu to Tan Ha (Duc Linh) are about 1,500 hectares. Like many dragon fruit gardeners, durian growers in the provinces are currently participating in cooperatives or cooperative groups to build durian brands by region with registration codes for export. According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, it is estimated that there are currently over 100 durian growing households participating in production organizations with nearly 400 hectares of durian being harvested to register for export area codes.

In mid-July, the price of durian suddenly increased from 50,000 VND - 55,000 VND/kg to 80,000 VND - 95,000 VND/kg (depending on the type), creating excitement for durian growers. Mr. Nguyen Van Minh in Da Tro village, Da Mi commune said: Although the price of durian this year has increased, it is not as much as last year in the off-season. However, with a price of 40,000 VND/kg, growers have made a profit. At 90,000 VND/kg in the main season, farmers make a big profit. In reality, not all gardeners can sell a large quantity of durian at the current price of 80,000 VND - 95,000 VND/kg. The reason is that when the durian harvest season begins, many gardeners have agreed or signed contracts with traders to purchase the entire output of the garden at a price lower than the market price. Gardeners call it “bao so”, which means buying both good and bad products. The price of “bao so” at the end of June was 42,000 VND/kg - 52,000 VND/kg depending on the quality of durian in each garden. According to the reporter’s investigation, although there was an agreement or contract signed with a trader or a durian collector to supply the market or export. But when the price of durian doubled, the trader still raised the price for the gardeners. Mr. Nguyen Hieu, residing in Mang To commune, has a durian garden of nearly 5 hectares in Ta Pua area. He said: My family agreed to sell the durian to the collector at 52,000 VND/kg at the end of June. About 10 days later, the price increased to 95,000 VND/kg, and the trader agreed to increase it to nearly 65,000 VND/kg for my family. The price goes up, the sale cannot be at the desired market price, but because there was a prior agreement, the gardener still maintains his reputation with the trader so that he can do business with them in the next case, because when the price goes up, both sides benefit. But when the price goes down, both sides suffer losses….

At this time, many durian gardens ripen and fall every night, fragrant. This is also the time when many tourists come to the orchards to visit. Some places treat their guests with "homegrown" durian... It is worth noting that not only Binh Thuan but also some other provinces and cities have seen the high price of durian, farmers have cut down some other types of trees to grow durian, causing the durian area to increase every day. Increasing the durian area will disrupt the crop planning and lack safety because the main export market is China, so avoid repeating the same thing as dragon fruit...
