Ms. Va Thi Ninh in Loc Ha village is harvesting the first peaches of the season.
Following the village secretary and head of Loc Ha, Gia Po Nai, we visited several households in the village that grow peaches and plums. Mr. Gia Po Nai said: Loc Ha village has 122 households with 680 inhabitants, and currently 13 households are still living in poverty. In terms of production, the villagers mainly grow peaches, plums, and cassava. Thanks to favorable climate and soil conditions, peaches and plums thrive in Loc Ha. The entire village has about 20 hectares of peach and plum orchards, with many households such as Gia Van Song, Va Van Co, Sung Gia Po, Gia Van Khua... Currently, Loc Ha village has established a group of 6 households producing Tam Hoa plums according to VietGAP standards.
The village of Loc Ha has approximately 20 hectares of peach and plum trees. These are considered key crops in economic development and poverty alleviation.
Gia Van Song's family has over 400 hybrid peach trees that are currently producing fruit.
Along National Highway 15C, passing through Loc Ha village, households growing peaches and plums have harvested their crops and are selling them to passersby. The family of Mr. Gia Van Song and Ms. Song Thi Pa is one of the largest peach growers in Loc Ha. Mr. Gia Van Song has been growing peaches for over 6 years; currently, his family owns more than 400 hybrid peach trees, 300 native peach trees (wild peaches), and over 50 small plum trees.
Peaches are sold by the people of Loc Ha at prices ranging from 30,000 to 40,000 VND per kilogram.
The peach and plum trees belonging to Mr. Gia Van Song's family are planted on a hillside right next to National Highway 15C, making harvesting and selling to customers convenient. During the peach season, the family wakes up early to harvest the peaches; some are sold to traders, while the rest are displayed for sale along National Highway 15C. The peach harvest season runs from April to the end of May. Early-season peaches sell for 30,000 to 40,000 VND/kg; small plums sell for 25,000 to 35,000 VND/kg. On average, each peach tree yields about 10kg per season. Mr. Song's family harvests about 1-2 quintals of peaches per day. Compared to the previous season, this year the hybrid and native peach trees produced fewer fruits, but they are still considered by the locals to be more profitable than other crops.
The villagers of Loc Ha hamlet bring their peaches to sell to customers along National Highway 15C, the section passing through Loc Ha hamlet, Nhi Son commune.
Like Mr. Song's family, Mr. Van Co's family also cultivates 2 hectares of peach and plum trees. From mid-April, Mr. Co's family begins harvesting the peaches. Each peach and plum harvest, after deducting expenses, brings Mr. Co's family a profit of approximately 40-50 million VND.
Nhi Son commune has 6 villages with over 98% of its population being ethnic Mong people. Over the past period, the Party committee and government at all levels, from district to commune, have consistently paid attention to, encouraged, and guided the people in developing their economy and cultivating crops suitable to the climate and soil conditions, with peaches and plums being the two main crops. The entire Nhi Son commune has approximately 33 hectares of peaches and 6 hectares of plums. Along with Loc Ha village, peaches and plums are also widely grown in Pa Hoc and Cat villages.
