To develop, we must transition to a green system.

The transition to green energy is no longer a trend but has become a mandatory requirement if Vietnam wants to ensure energy security and maintain long-term growth. This is also a requirement and standard set by the international market for businesses.

On the afternoon of April 21st, Tuoi Tre newspaper, the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance (PRO Vietnam), in collaboration with the Climate Change Department ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) and the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union, announced the main contents of the Vietnam Green 2026 project. The workshop "Green Energy Transition - A Driver of Sustainable Growth" is the first activity of this year's project.

Green energy is the inevitable choice.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Dao Duy Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion ( Ministry of Industry and Trade), said that according to the roadmap, RON92 gasoline will no longer be in circulation. Instead, this type of gasoline will be blended with 10% ethanol to become E10 gasoline.

This change will bring many clear benefits, because according to in-depth studies, each liter of gasoline emitted by combustion produces about 2.5 kg of CO₂. With a total gasoline consumption in the transportation sector of about 12 million m³/year, reducing gasoline consumption by 1 million m³ could reduce emissions by up to 2.5 million tons of CO₂.

The use of biofuels has become a popular trend in many countries. Specifically in the US, fuels from E10 to E85 are widely used. While E30 is popular in Brazil, many countries in Europe mainly use E10.

In Southeast Asia, the Philippines is currently using E15 and plans to upgrade to E20 in 2026. Thailand also has a similar target.

In particular, the pressure to transition to biofuels also stems from the issue of energy security. Vietnam still has to import about 30% of its fuel needs, while domestic supply depends partly on imported crude oil. Therefore, energy transition is not a mere trend, but an essential requirement in the process of economic development.

Mr. Ha Quang Anh, Acting Director of the Center for Climate Change Adaptation and Carbon Neutrality (Department of Climate Change, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), believes that sustainable development must be based on three pillars: economic, social, and environmental. Green transition, especially the use of E10 gasoline, is considered a solution contributing to reducing emissions in the transportation sector.

To ensure widespread acceptance of E10 gasoline, Mr. Quang Anh emphasized the need to guarantee three factors: quality, price, and suitability. Simultaneously, appropriate incentive policies and coordinated efforts between the government, businesses, and consumers are necessary for the product to become a part of daily life.

Businesses benefit

Mr. Tran Dinh Cuong, General Director of AgriS Production Development Joint Stock Company (a member company of AgriS Group), said that green production has become a core strategy of the enterprise. Instead of viewing bagasse, molasses, or sludge as waste, AgriS considers them as raw materials for a new production cycle.

At the factories, bagasse is used as biomass to generate electricity. The entire enterprise system has become self-sufficient in electricity for production, with any surplus fed into the national grid as part of a circular economy model that has been operating stably for many years.

However, according to Mr. Cuong, the biggest "bottleneck" lies in economic efficiency. The current purchase price for biomass electricity is only about 1,850 VND/kWh, which is not attractive enough for businesses to expand production or purchase additional agricultural by-products such as straw and rice husks... to generate electricity on a large scale.

Furthermore, the seasonal nature of the sugar industry means that boiler and turbine systems only operate for about 4 months each year, resulting in wasted infrastructure. Therefore, businesses propose that the biomass electricity pricing mechanism be adjusted to be more reasonable.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, Marketing Director of Duy Tan Plastic Manufacturing JSC, representing SCG Group, stated that at its factories in Binh Duong and Long An, the company has implemented rooftop solar power systems, gradually replacing traditional power sources. The application of technology in production management helps to tightly control processes, reduce defective products, and limit repetitive production; contributing to reduced energy and raw material consumption and consequently reducing carbon emissions.

According to Mr. Thanh, the value of this process lies not only in cost savings but also in data. Energy consumption and emission indicators are measured, stored, and become a "capability profile" for businesses to meet international environmental standards – an increasingly mandatory element in the global supply chain.

Notably, environmental standards (ESG) are becoming mandatory requirements for participation in global supply chains, forcing businesses to adapt if they don't want to be eliminated from the market. However, the transition still faces many challenges. New technologies like hydrogen are still expensive, while policy mechanisms have not kept pace with the realities on the ground.

Feel confident using biofuels.

Consumers can rest assured about the quality of gasoline in general and biofuels in particular circulating in the market, as all types of gasoline must comply with national technical standards.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has also conducted thorough research and assessment on the impacts of biofuels on the performance and lifespan of vehicle engines, drawing on the experiences of countries that have been using biofuels for decades, including the United States.

The supply of ethanol to meet national demand is basically sufficient, with only a negligible shortage that can be compensated for by future orders. Therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is actively urging businesses to invest in tank infrastructure and transportation to distribute the ethanol to consumers. (NGHI VU)

- Ms. NGUYEN THI PHUONG HA (Vice President of the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance - PRO Vietnam):

"Green" is no longer an option, but a necessity.

Previously, "green" was an option, but now it has become an essential and mandatory requirement for all economic sectors as well as consumers. Therefore, the transition to green energy needs to be approached holistically, linked to the circular economy, and based on a close connection between policy, finance, technology, and consumer behavior.

Through the Green Vietnam program in collaboration with Tuoi Tre newspaper, PRO Vietnam aims to contribute to shaping the correct understanding of green energy transition, making the concepts more accessible and relatable. Public awareness of waste sorting and green consumption has improved significantly; the remaining challenge is translating this into concrete actions.

Promoting green transformation and spreading practical initiatives.

Over two implementation seasons, the Green Vietnam project has organized nearly 20 diverse activities such as workshops, competitions, tours of green factories and businesses, Green Experience Day in Khanh Hoa, and Green Vietnam Festival in Ho Chi Minh City.

In particular, the Vietnam Green Festival has become an annual highlight of the project, attracting more than 33,000 visitors and distributing over 28,000 eco-friendly gifts.

Nearly 30,000 units of recyclable waste were also collected through the "exchange waste for gifts" program, thereby strongly promoting green actions in the community. The project also spread widely with over 4,000 news articles, videos, and more than 100 million interactions across all platforms.

Continuing that journey, Vietnam Green 2026 is implementing the theme "Green Transformation - Sustainable Efficiency" - including many activities such as a series of thematic workshops, talk shows - podcasts, the "Discover Green Businesses" program, the Vietnam Green trekking race, the Vietnam Green Festival 2026, the Vietnam Green Award 2026, the "Green Ideas" competition and the writing competition "Creating the Future of Agriculture" organized in collaboration with Thanh Thanh Cong - Bien Hoa Joint Stock Company (AgriS)...

These activities aim to promote green transformation from awareness to action throughout society, spreading applicable models and initiatives...
