The myriad colors of life

Báo Thừa Thiên HuếBáo Thừa Thiên Huế16/08/2023

At the North Central Region Fine Arts Exhibition, the public was captivated by the simplicity and familiarity of the works on display, many of which were inspired by everyday life, the struggle for survival, and familiar family activities.

“The image of the countryside with farmers harvesting their crops is depicted realistically. The artist doesn't elaborate much on the laborers in the painting, but the bright yellow hues representing a bountiful harvest contrast with the tranquility of the muted tones—where the farmers are depicted—allowing viewers to feel the beauty of their labor, which, though arduous, is still full of joy,” shared Hoang Van Thanh, a student at the University of Science , Hue University, about the artwork “Countryside Harvest Day” by artist Trinh Hoang Tan (Quang Tri province).

Bountiful harvests are also a popular theme among artists. Using muted, contrasting colors, the artwork "Flying Dream" by artist Nguyen Luong Sang ( Quang Binh province) takes viewers to a fishing boat trip, depicting the hardships of the fishermen.

The images of hands weathered by countless storms, bare feet standing firm against the waves, and the boat and school of fish symbolize the hope for successful voyages far from shore. The exhibition also introduces to the public the artwork "Herring Season" by artist Le Thuan Long (Quang Binh province), created using handcrafted fabric. The image of herring swimming playfully in the ocean is skillfully depicted by the artist, and the novel material has also won the hearts of viewers.

Society during the period of reform also inspired many artists. The image of the dock at the Formosa factory ( Ha Tinh province ), with its ships tirelessly transporting and exporting goods day and night, was presented to the public by artist Nguyen Van Duong (Ha Tinh province) through his painting "Covered Dock" using powder paint.

The paintings "Port Street" (by artist Ngo Duy Luong, Thanh Hoa province), "Sounds of a New Day" (by artist Le Dan Te, Quang Binh province), and "Homeland in Renewal" (by artist Pham Thi Hong Dat, Quang Binh province) depict the work of people during the country's period of renewal.

In particular, the artwork "New Rhythm of Life" by artist Nguyen Dinh Truyen (Nghe An province) brings the public closer to the heartbeats and sounds of the country's industrialization and modernization era.

Using paper cutouts, the artist depicted laborers building roads and modern structures. This was also one of two works that won the B prize at the exhibition.

The other winning entry in category B was the painting "Wandering" by artist Hoang Thanh Phong (Thua Thien Hue province). The painting looks so realistic that some people mistook it for a photograph. The image of two pine cones lying on the ground evokes images of carefree afternoons of youth, of rambling, tangled thoughts, much like the way pine needles lie on the ground. The image of the pine cone is also considered a symbol of life and happiness.

Images of soldiers also appear in the artworks at the exhibition. The works "Gifts to Truong Sa" (by artist Ho Thanh Tho, Quang Tri province) and "We are soldiers on distant islands" (by artist Le Trong Tan, Thanh Hoa province) are expressions of love sent to the soldiers at the forefront, who, despite difficulties, remain steadfast on the land and sea to protect the homeland.

The artwork "The Battle" by artist Truong Minh Luyen (Quang Binh province) also moved viewers with its image of a firefighter selflessly rushing into the flames to rescue a trapped child.

Ms. Mai Thi Ngoc Oanh, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, shared that although this year's exhibition did not have many new features in terms of developing artists (not many young artists participated) or appearance (not many new genres), it did create opportunities for artists to hone their skills, change their perspectives, and explore new things to break out of their comfort zones.

The works participating in the exhibition reflected the fine traditional cultural values and socio-economic achievements of the homeland and the country; thereby creating spiritual and cultural values that are deeply rooted in national cultural identity.

Mr. Ho Dang Thanh Ngoc, Chairman of the Union of Arts and Culture Associations of the province, said that the exhibition is an opportunity for artists in the North Central provinces to meet and exchange ideas.

"For artists, exhibitions are not only an opportunity to admire the works of their colleagues to inspire continued creativity, but also a source of encouragement for artists to further develop their careers."

"Although circumstances and material conditions for creation are sometimes limited, artists still dedicate themselves to creating, exploring their inner world, and contributing their experiences and emotions to the public and society through their works," Mr. Ho Dang Thanh Ngoc expressed.
