
According to CNN, a spokesperson for the US Secret Service said the incident occurred at 6 p.m. (Eastern Time), when a man approached a checkpoint outside the White House complex and suddenly opened fire on security personnel. The suspect was wounded after being shot by security forces and later died at a local hospital.
US officials said the suspect was identified as someone with mental instability, adding that a "no-access warrant" had been issued for the suspect beforehand.
US President Donald Trump was present at the White House compound when the incident occurred and was unharmed. A White House official said President Trump had been briefed on the shooting.
According to witnesses, dozens of gunshots were heard near the White House at approximately 6 p.m. The area was then sealed off for about 40 minutes. Reporters working on the North Lawn of the White House were instructed to move into the White House press briefing room for shelter. The North Lawn and the White House press briefing room remained sealed off for nearly an hour.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the FBI is assisting the Secret Service in investigating the shooting near the White House grounds. The incident occurred less than a month after another shooting near the White House during a White House Correspondents Association dinner.
