US appoints team to support meeting between Putin and Zelensky

The White House announced that several senior US officials will work to speed up a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Zelensky.

RT reported that White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on August 19 that US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will lead coordinated efforts to get the talks underway "as soon as possible".

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt added that President Trump spoke with President Putin by phone on August 18 and the Russian leader agreed to begin the next phase of the peace process, referring to a meeting between Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky and then, if necessary, a three-way meeting.

On August 18, President Trump held talks with Mr. Zelensky at the White House just days after the US-Russia summit in Alaska.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Trump said he planned to hold a bilateral meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine as part of US efforts to end the nearly four-year conflict.

Moscow affirmed its readiness to engage in further discussions aimed at reaching a lasting solution to the Ukrainian conflict. However, the Kremlin leader stressed that eliminating the root causes of the conflict would be the key to resolving the problem.
