The US has stopped collecting reciprocal tariffs.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced it will cease collecting taxes under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) at 12:01 PM today, Vietnam time. This decision comes more than three days after the U.S. Supreme Court declared these taxes illegal.
The suspension of collection coincides with US President Donald Trump's imposition of a new 15% global tariff under a different legal basis to replace the tariffs that were rejected by the Supreme Court on February 20. The US Customs and Border Protection agency emphasized that this suspension does not affect other tariffs previously imposed by the Trump administration.
The agency said it would send further guidance to the business community as needed. It is estimated that the Supreme Court ruling could force the U.S. Treasury Department to repay more than $175 billion in IEEPA tax revenue. This forecasting model shows that IEEPA-based taxes previously generated more than $500 million per day for the U.S. budget.
The figures above illustrate the enormous financial scale involved in this legal dispute. If importers request refunds and they are approved, the U.S. government could be dealing with one of the largest tax refunds in modern history.
In this context, the market and business community are closely monitoring further guidance from CBP, particularly regarding the mechanism for handling amounts collected before the cessation of the policy.
Replacing the IEEPA tariff with a new global tariff also raises questions about its impact on supply chains, prices, and international trade relations in the future.
