The US military confirmed on November 6th that its Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarines have been deployed to the Middle East.
"On November 5th, an Ohio-class submarine arrived in the area of responsibility of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM)," CENTCOM announced on social media platform X.
The statement did not provide details about the deployment or the vessel's operating location, but only included a photograph allegedly showing the submarine passing through the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal runs through Egypt, borders Israel, and connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea.
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the deployment of the submarine is part of a US force redeployment and aims to prevent the spread of the Israeli-Hamas conflict.
Kirby emphasized that this move was necessary to protect U.S. military forces and infrastructure in the region, as well as to send a strong deterrent message to forces intending to escalate tensions in the Middle East.
According to Israel's Ynet news site, the new submarine deployed in the region is the largest of 14 ballistic missile submarines controlled by the US Navy and equipped with ballistic missiles.
According to TASS news agency, citing US military sources, the submarine is capable of carrying 154 Tomahawk missiles or 66 Navy SEALs.
