Three technology giants OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank announced plans on September 23 to build five new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in the US, as part of the ambitious Stargate mega-project.
OpenAI, the creator of the popular ChatGPT software, will partner with software developer Oracle to open three new locations in Texas, New Mexico, and an undisclosed location in the Midwest, the announcement said. Two other data centers will be built in Ohio and Texas by OpenAI, Japan's SoftBank, and an affiliate. The new projects are expected to create 25,000 local jobs.
OpenAI said these new locations, along with expansions to existing facilities and ongoing projects with CoreWeave, will bring Stargate's total data center capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts, representing a total investment of more than $400 billion over the next three years. The entire $500 billion Stargate project is expected to create a total of 10 gigawatts of data center capacity.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stressed that AI can only realize its potential if given enough computing power.
The announcement comes shortly after Nvidia said it would invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and supply chips to data centers. OpenAI and its partners plan to use debt financing to lease chips for the Stargate project, according to people familiar with the matter.
Earlier in January 2025, US President Donald Trump chaired a meeting with leading technology companies to launch Stargate, a private initiative with a plan to spend up to 500 billion USD to build infrastructure to serve AI applications.
OpenAI and investor Microsoft are among the tech giants pouring billions into data centers to run generative AI services like ChatGPT and Copilot. AI’s role in sensitive areas like defense and China’s efforts to catch up have made the nascent technology a top priority for Trump in his second term.
