The US government has announced it will strengthen restrictions on the export of chips and technologies used in artificial intelligence (AI).
According to new regulations announced by the US government on January 13, the country will limit the number of AI chips that can be exported to most countries, while some close allies will not be affected by this restriction. At the same time, the US will maintain its ban on exporting AI chips to China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
"The U.S. is currently leading in AI, both in AI development and AI chip design, and it's crucial that we maintain that," said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
The US has just announced regulations restricting the export of AI chips.
According to Reuters, the new regulations aim to strengthen the Biden administration's policies aimed at preventing rivals like China from accessing advanced chips to develop capabilities that could compete with Washington.
New limits will be placed on advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) used to power data centers dedicated to training AI models. These new regulations will take effect 120 days from the date of announcement, thus the responsibility for enforcement will rest with the administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
AI has the potential to enhance access to healthcare, education , and food, among other benefits, but it could also aid in the development of biological weapons and other weapons, and support cyberattacks and espionage.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the US must prepare for a rapid increase in AI capabilities in the coming years, which could have implications for the economy and national security.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that in response to new regulations from the United States, China will take necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

The new US decision has angered technology companies, who argue that it will affect sales and the potential for technological development in the US by limiting the number of chips that can be exported, according to The New York Times .
The European Commission (EC) also expressed concern about the Biden administration's measures, as some EU member states and businesses would be affected by the restrictions.
