On August 26th, tens of thousands of 6th and 10th grade students in public schools in Ho Chi Minh City attended school for the first day of the 2024-2025 school year, learning about the new educational level and the 2018 General Education Program.
Each school in Ho Chi Minh City has a different approach to help students gradually adapt to the routines and, especially, to the learning methods at the new school level. Some schools in Ho Chi Minh City call the first week of school for 6th graders the "civic education week".
Accordingly, the students become familiar with the school, teachers, school routines, school areas, and functional rooms. And most importantly, they enter a new and different school environment at the secondary level.
At Nguyen Van To Secondary School (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), last week, before the 6th grade students returned to school, the school held a meeting with parents to create the best possible mindset for their children as they embark on their first year of schooling.
"During the parent-teacher meeting, we wanted parents to understand the new school level. Please don't ask about your child's grades and don't pressure them to get 9s or 10s like in elementary school. Children need encouragement and support to have a positive mindset so they can enter the new school level effectively and happily," said Mr. Nguyen Vi Tuong Thuy, principal of Nguyen Van To Secondary School.
At this school, during the first week, students only attend school for one session, leaving at lunchtime, and there are no formal teaching activities. The focus is primarily on group activities, in-depth classroom introductions, and guidance on how to study the 2018 General Education Program.
Ha Huy Tap Secondary School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) also began introducing 6th-grade students to the school from August 28th, following a similar approach of thoroughly introducing the functional rooms and areas within the school.
"Because the school is under renovation, we couldn't gather the 6th graders on August 26th. The transition from 5th to 6th grade is a crucial moment in their psychological development. The school dedicated a day for the 6th graders to get acquainted with each other, after which they will interact with other grades, ensuring that after a week they have the confidence to start the new school year," said Ms. Hua Thi Diem Tram, the school principal.
Prepare well for the new school year.
According to Ms. Hua Thi Diem Tram, during the first week, Ha Huy Tap Secondary School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) focused on guiding students on the most essential aspects of secondary school education under the 2018 General Education Program. With a new level of education and a new 2018 General Education Program, students need to be prepared psychologically.
