"Five Ten" lacks emphasis

“Five Ten” (photo) is the debut feature film of director Tan Hoang Thong, inspired by the folk game of hide and seek. The story has a meaningful message but the weak expression and unattractive script make the film bland and lacking in highlights.

The movie is showing in theaters nationwide.

A group of 6 young people, along with Yoga teacher Quan (played by Tran Phong) go to Da Lat for a vacation and practice. At the villa they live in, strange phenomena begin to appear: a broken mirror, the strange behavior of the housekeeper, prophetic tarot cards... Finally, the game they participate in: Five Ten. Whoever wins will be rewarded with money. The first 2 rounds go by normally, but in the 3rd round, the incident begins to happen. One by one, each person in the group is murdered, all suspicion falls on the housekeeper. However, when the murderer is revealed, the reason why each person died is also revealed...

Exploiting familiar folk games to make a horror film is the first plus point of the film, because it arouses the curiosity of the audience. The process of the game is the most dramatic time of the film. The fighting scenes or the murderer suddenly attacking each person are done quite well, creating suspense and tension for the audience. Horror films originate from grudges and revenge, so they do not get bogged down in spiritual, mystical or superstitious matters. The actors in the film are all handsome men and beautiful women, so they light up the screen, especially actor Tran Phong in the role of teacher Quan is an impressive face to the audience when he played the role of Dung in the film "Mat Biec" (adapted from the literary work of writer Nguyen Nhat Anh). In "Nam Muoi", Tran Phong has more acting space as he is the main character and shows many nuances and emotions of the character.

The message of the film is also very clear: those who do wrong and profit from the pain of others must pay the price, even with their lives. Bullying others by posting clips online to attract views and likes as well as negative comments and reviews from the online community are also strongly condemned.

Unfortunately, the exploitation of material to create the story is still limited. Instead of highlighting the role or evil of each person in the group so that they will pay the price they deserve, the film leads the audience around with the introduction of each character without any highlights. Then the tarot cards seem mysterious but do not say anything, even the character Nam, who is the reader, can see that he is about to be killed without any defense or calculation. The initial set-up or smokescreen points are not fully utilized or resolved. The situation of the last person in the group resisting, escaping and surviving is also not convincing. In particular, the victim of bullying who commits suicide is also built hastily and superficially. The revenger is also not deeply exploited in terms of developments, psychology, and actions. Even the group of young people who cause trouble, if killed, will be too high a price for their mistakes. Because both evil and pain are not done well, do not create a strong impression or promote the audience's emotions; So the movie just passed by in a hurry and bland way.
