In recent years, the trend of younger people achieving high scores on international English proficiency certificates has become increasingly common. However, the case of Do Duc Viet Khoi – a 6th-grade student at Newton Secondary School ( Hanoi ) who achieved an IELTS score of 8.0 on his first attempt – still attracts special attention because behind that number lies a mindset that uses language as a tool to access multidisciplinary knowledge.

Unlike traditional methods of learning a foreign language – which focus on grammar and dry academic exercises – Viet Khoi's journey to achieving an 8.0 IELTS score was closely linked to natural accumulation of knowledge.

According to Viet Khoi, the key factor that helped him achieve this level of proficiency came from his daily communication environment. At Newton Secondary School, the bilingual program created an ideal language ecosystem.

English is no longer confined to language classes but has become a means for Khoi to access Mathematics and Science . Regular interaction with native English-speaking teachers and friends in learning projects has helped him develop an unconditioned language reflex. This is a crucial factor that helped Khoi achieve a natural and fluent speaking and listening performance in the Speaking and Listening sections without needing intensive test preparation classes.

Transforming interests into academic abilities.

One of Viet Khoi's self-learning methods is his ability to utilize digital learning resources. Instead of simply for entertainment, this student makes it a habit to watch YouTube channels specializing in space science, mathematics, and social issues in English.

Acquiring knowledge from sources like TED-Ed or children's science magazines has helped Khoi build his academic vocabulary and critical thinking skills.

This explains why, despite being only 11 years old – an age where students typically struggle with the background knowledge required to tackle macro-level topics in the IELTS exam such as the environment, technology, or education – Viet Khoi was still able to develop his ideas coherently and with depth.

An IELTS score of 8.0 is not the final milestone in this sixth-grade student's academic journey. Viet Khoi continues to demonstrate his abilities in international intellectual competitions that demand logical thinking and in-depth specialized knowledge.

With Silver Medals at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO), Bronze Medals at the Asian Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary School Students (ASMOPSS), Gold Medals at the 3rd Chemistry and Natural Science Olympiad for Secondary and High School Students, and numerous Gold Medals at prestigious Mathematics and Science competitions such as FISO and TIMO, Viet Khoi has proven to his family and school his passion for science and technology.

Not limited to just solving problems in exams, Viet Khoi also quickly tried his hand at practical scientific research. One of his most notable achievements was winning a Silver Medal at the I2ASPO exhibition.

Thanks to his self-learning abilities and passion, Viet Khoi quickly achieved admirable accomplishments.

Despite being only in junior high school, Viet Khoi confidently collaborated with a group of high school students on a research project about luminescent nanomaterials applied in cancer cell identification. Approaching modern biomedical topics, which are challenging even for university students, demonstrates Viet Khoi's self-learning ability and problem-solving skills, which are already approaching professional research standards. Even more remarkably, Viet Khoi's interests have expanded to include economics, as evidenced by his "High Distinction" certification from the International Economics Olympiad (IOA).

These achievements clearly demonstrate that when language barriers are broken down, Vietnamese students are fully capable of conquering the world's most complex intellectual heights from a very young age.

The story of Do Duc Viet Khoi is not only a testament to individual ability, but also reflects the effectiveness of a modern educational approach: When foreign languages are absorbed through experiential activities and practical academic learning, milestones like IELTS 8.0 will come as a natural result of persistent accumulation, rather than the pressure of exams.
