Diagnosed with cancer at age 17

In June 2023, as he was preparing to enter 11th grade, Truong Huy Bach (Phu Binh High School, Thai Nguyen province) visited the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion for a check-up and was shocked to learn that he had acute myeloid leukemia (a type of blood cancer).

At the age of 17, Bach had to befriend medication and the needles of chemotherapy drugs inserted deep into his body. He underwent chemotherapy four times, with one treatment lasting up to two months.

Upon hearing the news of his younger brother's illness, Bach's older brother temporarily put aside his work in Japan to return home and care for him. Bach's parents also stayed by his side day and night, encouraging and motivating their son to overcome the terrible disease.

Not only his family and friends, but also Bach's teachers constantly checked on him, giving him more motivation and hope to continue studying and preparing for the university entrance exam. At that time, he had to defer his studies for a year to receive medical treatment.

Throughout his time in the hospital bed, Bach never stopped studying, reviewing, and solving problems on his own.

"Every time I solve a problem, I feel even more empowered to overcome my illness," Huy Bach shared with a gentle smile, explaining what motivates him to forget the pain of his treatment.

The sight of the student always bringing his books and study materials with him during check-ups and treatments filled the doctors and nurses at the hospital with admiration.

“Normally, after chemotherapy, people are too tired to even eat or drink, but Huy Bach can have chemotherapy in the morning and study in the evening. Even the doctors are very impressed by his studiousness,” shared Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Trang, Department of Intensive Care, National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.

This year's university entrance exam presents Bach with another challenge, as it's his first year taking the exam under the new curriculum.

Due to poor health, Bach was unable to attend as many extra classes as his peers. Besides making the most of his time listening to lectures and asking questions to his teachers at school, Bach enrolled in online classes and proactively studied on his own at home.

Thanks to his persistent efforts and unwavering determination to overcome illness, the outstanding student achieved a total score of 28 in the A00 subject group in the National High School Graduation Examination, with individual scores of 9 in Mathematics, 9.25 in Physics, and 9.75 in Chemistry. These are truly admirable scores for any candidate, especially considering that Bach took a year off to receive treatment.

With his desired score, Bach applied to Hanoi University of Education, majoring in Mathematics, to continue pursuing his dream of becoming a mathematics teacher.

Upon receiving his exam results, Bach immediately called to share his joy with the doctors and nurses at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. Dr. Trang recounted that the entire department erupted in happiness upon learning that Bach had reaped the rewards of his tireless efforts.
