Striped pigs have long been a familiar livestock breed among ethnic minorities in the highlands. In recent years, many households have shifted from small-scale farming to commercial production thanks to stable selling prices and low care costs.
In Dak Rve commune, Mr. Nguyen Khac Phuong's family has maintained a large-scale striped pig farming model for many years. In 2025 alone, the family sold approximately 270 commercial pigs at prices ranging from 130,000 to 140,000 VND/kg. According to the farmer, striped pigs easily adapt to local conditions and utilize natural food sources such as bananas, grass, and agricultural by-products.
Not only in Dak Rve, but many ethnic minority households in other highland areas are also raising striped pigs to develop their economy . The economic value of this native breed is increasingly enhanced as the market favors specialty products made from striped pig meat.
From this raw material, many cooperatives and production facilities have developed products such as smoked meat and smoked pork. Among them, Duc Nong Cooperative has developed a smoked striped pork product that has received OCOP certification, and has also linked its members to proactively secure raw materials.
Developing striped pig farming on a commercial scale not only contributes to the preservation of native livestock breeds but also creates sustainable livelihoods and increases income for people in the highlands of Quang Ngai province.
