Raising incomes, building advanced new rural areas.

In 2022, after many efforts to overcome difficulties in fulfilling the criteria, Cu Thang commune, Thanh Son district, was recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as achieving the new rural standard. Following this recognition, the local Party committee and government decided to continue working on improving and enhancing the achieved indicators and criteria to build an advanced new rural area, with the most important aspect being increasing the income of local people.

The model of growing Dien pomelos according to VietGAP standards by the Cu Thang Dien Pomelo Cooperative has yielded high economic efficiency, contributing to increased income for its members.

Comrade Dang Quoc Bao, Chairman of the People's Committee of the commune, said: “To continue building advanced new rural areas, the local Party committee and government always identify raising people's income as a key factor. Therefore, in addition to building and replicating production models, the commune also encourages businesses to invest in building production facilities in the locality to create local jobs for people; creating conditions for people to learn vocational skills and go abroad for work to increase their income. Currently, there are 7 businesses operating stably in the commune, creating jobs for hundreds of local workers. In 2024, the commune will have an additional 45 local workers employed and 17 cases of people going abroad for work, exceeding the set plan. The poverty rate according to the multidimensional standard decreased by 6 households last year, and the near-poverty rate according to the multidimensional standard decreased by 15 households, in the direction of sustainable poverty reduction. The average income of people in the commune reached 42 million VND/person/year, an increase of 5% compared to last year.” 2023.

Recognizing agriculture as the main production direction for economic development and increasing income for local people, the Party Committee and the commune government have focused on closely leading and directing, propagating and mobilizing people to utilize land areas, expand production, implement the transformation of crop and livestock structures, apply scientific and technological advancements, develop production towards a commodity-oriented approach, and gradually increase food production over the years.

In addition to maintaining and developing traditional food crops, the commune has encouraged people to expand the area of ​​land for producing high-value vegetable crops; and continued land consolidation and exchange, building concentrated production areas and specializing in some other crops.

Emphasis is placed on investing in large-scale, commercial livestock farming of pigs, buffaloes, cattle, goats, and poultry, yielding high economic returns. Models such as ostrich farming, pig farming, large livestock farming, poultry farming, aquaculture, and fruit tree cultivation have proven economically effective and are being widely replicated.

At the same time, the commune government has created conditions for people to access preferential loans for agricultural production and small-scale handicrafts in developing family economies; encouraging people to leverage local strengths in agricultural production...

Mr. Dinh Trong Vinh, owner of an ostrich farm in Tru Trong area, Cu Thang commune, shared: “After researching and realizing that livestock and poultry farming is quite common nowadays, I decided to switch to ostrich farming. This is an animal that is popular in the market, easy to raise, and easy to sell. Currently, we are raising over 100 ostriches of all ages, including 40 that are ready for sale (weighing 90-100kg/each). With an average selling price of 130,000-140,000 VND/each, after deducting costs, we earn a profit of about 6 million VND/each. Many households in the commune and neighboring communes want to learn from our experience and buy breeding stock, and we are ready to support and introduce them to product consumers.”

In the coming period, Cu Thang will continue to build on the achievements already made, especially by encouraging households to support each other in developing household economies through linkages and product consumption; creating conditions for businesses to invest in expanding production, creating stable jobs, contributing to raising the income of local people, and gradually completing the criteria for building advanced new rural areas.
