“ Karate-Do helped me really grow up”
Now, as a Karate-Do coach, with a national third-degree black belt, Vinh still feels emotional when recalling his first days learning martial arts. Vinh lost his father at a young age, and was often bullied because of his weak body.
Therefore, the desire to have better health and a stronger spirit is always present in him. “When I was young, every time I went to Dong Ha to play and saw my friends practicing in beautiful martial arts uniforms, I wished I could wear that martial arts uniform one day.
When I was 9 years old, my aunt took me to Dong Ha to learn Karate for 3 months in the summer and then returned to Vinh Linh to continue my education. Because I loved this subject, in 2002, I asked my mother to let me travel from Vinh Linh to Dong Ha by train on weekends to learn martial arts. However, because my family's circumstances were too difficult, my path to pursuing Karate-Do also went through many ups and downs...", Vinh said.
In 2004, Vinh moved to the mountains to live with his aunt and study at Ba Long Secondary School. Every weekend, when his aunt's husband, Karate Coach Nguyen Van Bang, came from Dong Ha to visit his wife and children, Vinh asked for extra lessons to satisfy his passion for learning martial arts.
Under the guidance of his first teacher, Coach Nguyen Van Bang, Quang Vinh made remarkable progress and demonstrated his mettle, steadfastness, and quickness in grasping lessons. In 2007, Quang Vinh was sent to Cua Tung to work as an assistant to Coach Nguyen Van Bang at a Karate-Do class. This was also the time when Vinh actively practiced, absorbed all the quintessence of the school, and gradually matured by learning the teacher's teaching methods.
Mr. Vinh said that thanks to Karate-Do, he has truly matured. Also thanks to pursuing this martial art, he has learned to improve his personality and ethics, become more confident and courageous. From here, he began to have his first students and cherished the plan to continue to "incubate" karate talents for his hometown.
Graduated from the hydroelectric plant operation major of Nam Viet International Vocational College, however, according to Mr. Vinh, martial arts seemed to have chosen him because after graduating, although he had a fairly stable job, he decided to quit his job to return to his hometown to focus on... teaching martial arts.
He shared: “In 2013, I returned to my hometown with the desire to build a Karate-Do movement in Cua Tung. Initially, the newly opened club only had 11 participants, but I felt very attached to my students and wanted to join hands to develop the Karate-Do movement in my hometown. It seemed that all the students understood my wishes, they were very obedient and active in training.”
Up to now, after 12 years of maintenance and development, Cua Tung Karate-Do Club has become one of the clubs with a regular and quality training movement with about 80 students studying regularly. Of these, 33 students have achieved the first degree black belt, 3 students have achieved the second degree black belt.

Combining martial arts with morality and love
Twice a week, at Lap Thach pagoda yard, Nam Dong Ha ward, 60 children from difficult circumstances attend free martial arts classes taught by Coach Quang Vinh to train their bodies, learn martial arts, and cultivate morality. Not only do they learn self-defense skills, train their will, determination, and discipline, in this class, the children also feel the love, sharing, and heart of Coach Quang Vinh when he is always dedicated to helping, ready to support with gifts, cakes, food, and drinks for his students.
Mr. Vinh said: “Since I was a child, it was very difficult for me to access martial arts, so I want to make up for the disadvantages of poor children, helping them have the opportunity to learn martial arts. With the support and encouragement of the abbot, the children here have a good environment to practice health, self-defense skills, the spirit of mutual love and support in life as well as the ability to protect the weak.”
At Cua Tung Karate-Do Club, in addition to focusing on implementing well the training, coaching and competition work according to the national program; focusing on investing in facilities, training and competition equipment that meet the standards according to regulations, Coach Quang Vinh also regularly encourages and motivates the martial artists.
In particular, in addition to martial arts training, every month the Cua Tung Karate-Do Club has an ethics and culture class. Thanks to that, the students are very well-behaved and have the will to strive to become a well-rounded person in terms of culture, ethics, and physical strength.

“From the process of persistently practicing Karate-Do, many of my students have gradually matured, become more confident in communicating in front of crowds and stay away from social evils. In addition, they also have the will to strive in their studies, achieving many achievements and high prizes in provincial and national competitions for excellent students; passing university entrance exams and having stable jobs after graduation. Wherever they are, whatever they do, they uphold the spirit of martial arts, maintain good manners and ethics, and are willing to help people in difficult circumstances. To me, that is a happiness that not everyone has,” Mr. Vinh proudly said.
