In recent years, the traditional cultural values of ethnic minority communities have become an important resource in the province's tourism development, creating unique heritage tourism and community-based tourism products that attract a large number of tourists to visit and experience.
The Ben Than community tourism destination offers visitors many experiences exploring the pristine beauty of nature and the unique customs of the local ethnic communities.
Ben Than village in Dong Son commune, Tan Son district, lies within the majestic and naturally rich Xuan Son National Forest system. As the most remote area of the commune, Ben Than is home to over 100 households living along the mountainside, primarily belonging to the Dao ethnic group. In recent years, infrastructure investments have facilitated easier travel and trade for the residents. The people are actively engaged in production and economic development, while also diligently passing on their cultural traditions to their children and grandchildren.
Recognizing the potential and advantages of nature's gifts, in August 2023, Tan Son Organic Agricultural Cooperative launched the Ben Than community tourism destination. Besides improving transportation infrastructure and constructing facilities to serve the dining and accommodation needs of tourists, the cooperative established the Ben Than Community Tourism Team, organizing exciting experiential activities such as: bathing in the stream, visiting caves, and enjoying and learning about local culinary culture.
At Ben Than Community Tourism Area, visitors can learn about the customs, culture, and folk art activities of the Dao and Muong people; enjoy the distinctive culinary culture of the Northwest region with dishes prepared from fresh, readily available ingredients; experience the Dao people's herbal bath, soaking in a warm herbal bath or bathing in the cool stream amidst majestic natural scenery; and experience wearing traditional costumes to take photos with the locals. Taking advantage of the cool climate and year-round clean water flowing from the caves, suitable for raising cold-water fish, the cooperative has established an organic sturgeon farming group and an organic Shan Tuyet tea group to serve the needs of tourists and supply the market.
Ms. Trieu Thi Thom, head of the community tourism group, shared: “The environment is always green, clean, and beautiful, with the green of the forest interspersed with the vibrant colors of native flowers. The culinary culture of our Dao ethnic people has left many beautiful impressions on tourists. Developing tourism is also an opportunity to create jobs and improve the quality of life for the people. With direct income from tourism activities, the lives of the people will be improved, and the culture of the ethnic minorities in the locality will be promoted and widely disseminated.”
Visitors also have the opportunity to experience picking tea leaves from ancient trees and participate in the tea processing process with the Dao ethnic minority people.
Community-based tourism is becoming a highlight in the journey of exploring the ancestral land, helping to promote and introduce unique cultural values to tourists. Preserving, conserving, and promoting ethnic cultural identity is a solution to diversify distinctive tourism products and attract tourists to localities in the province. Among them, Tan Son and Thanh Son districts, with their unique Dao and Muong ethnic cultures and the natural beauty of Xuan Son National Park, are suitable areas for developing this type of tourism, with ethnic minorities accounting for over 80% of the population.
Comrade Nguyen Viet Trung, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Chairman of the Provincial Folk Arts Association, said: “With the unique characteristic of the province having many ethnic minority groups living together, during their lives and work, customs and traditions have formed, creating cultural identities suitable to their living environment; creating distinct characteristics. To date, the province has preserved and promoted many unique cultural values, which are then applied to tourism development, creating unique and distinctive products of each ethnic group, which are highly appreciated by tourists.”
With the goal of developing tourism with attractive cultural identity and making it an important economic sector of the province, the tourism industry has clearly defined its objective of building high-quality, diverse, branded tourism products and becoming one of the leading tourist destinations in the Northwest region. The province is encouraging and supporting several types of tourism with potential and strengths such as: community-based cultural tourism, ecotourism combined with agricultural tourism, and adventure tourism to meet the increasingly diverse needs of tourists.
