Practicing beautiful handwriting not only helps to write beautifully but also helps the writer to be careful, patient and skillful. For many years, the Education Department of Can Tho City and schools have always paid attention to and developed the movement "Keeping notebooks clean, practicing beautiful handwriting".
Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Lien, teacher at Nguyen Hue Primary School, teaches Do Quynh Huong to write at school.
Every school day, Do Quynh Huong, a 4th grader at Nguyen Hue Primary School (O Mon District), spends about 30 minutes in the afternoon practicing beautiful handwriting with Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Lien, homeroom teacher of class 4A. After studying and doing homework, Quynh Huong spends another 30 minutes carefully writing poems and paragraphs with bold and light strokes. She has maintained this habit regularly throughout the past 4 years of school. Do Quynh Huong's passion and persistent efforts to practice her handwriting have helped her win third prize in the 2020-2021 school year and first prize in the 2022-2023 school year in the city-level beautiful handwriting contest.
Do Quynh Huong shared: “The teacher taught me how to write and I even created more capital letters. I am very happy to win the prize and will continue to practice to make my handwriting more beautiful. Practicing handwriting also helps me practice patience, study hard and study well”. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Diem, Quynh Huong’s mother, shared: “Huong has loved drawing and writing since grade 1. Therefore, the family always creates conditions for her to practice beautiful handwriting; such as arranging time and space for her to study, buying notebooks and writing books for her”.
Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Lien said that the school's Board of Directors and teachers always support the movement of beautiful handwriting. Students are very diligent and hard-working in studying and practicing handwriting. To help students write beautifully, in the process of practicing handwriting, it is necessary to pay attention to the steps. First, train them to write correctly; second, sit in the correct posture; third, they must write correctly between strokes, then gradually improve to help them write smoothly and write more creative handwriting samples. Ms. Lien said: "Practicing beautiful handwriting also helps students learn other subjects well, especially Literature. Because when practicing handwriting combined with writing practice, students also have a good foundation to learn other subjects, the notebooks are clearly presented, and knowledge is better absorbed. In addition, it also encourages students to develop their thinking, aesthetics, diligence, and enhance their passion for learning." For many years, Nguyen Hue Primary School has had students win prizes in the city-level beautiful handwriting contest. In the 2022-2023 school year, under the guidance of Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Lien, 3/4 of the students participated in and won high prizes in the city-level calligraphy contest, with 1 first prize, 1 second prize and 1 third prize.

The Can Tho City Handwriting Contest for the 2022-2023 school year had 450 primary school students participating. These are outstanding students with many achievements through the handwriting contest selected from schools, districts and counties in the city. The organizing committee awarded 180 individual prizes for high achievements (including 5 first prizes, 35 second prizes, 55 third prizes). Le Thanh Du, a student of class 5A1, Tay Do Primary School (Phong Dien district), 1 of the 5 students who won the first prize, shared: "To write beautifully, I chose a pen that fits my hand and is light. When practicing writing, I always pay attention to sitting in the correct posture, holding the pen and placing the notebook to avoid spinal diseases, myopia and be able to write faster". According to Thanh Du, teachers teach and encourage students to keep their notebooks clean and beautiful, and guide each stroke of the handwriting. Writing correctly, carefully and beautifully helps train you to be careful in your studies and gain more confidence.
According to Mr. Le Thanh Long, Head of the Primary Education Department, Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City, the movement "Keeping notebooks clean, practicing beautiful handwriting" is annually paid attention to and directed by management levels to schools in the area right from the beginning of the school year, by assigning tasks to homeroom teachers to directly provide regular training during regular classes and through Beautiful Handwriting Clubs organized on the second day of the day for gifted students who love the subject. This is an opportunity for students to improve their skills in writing beautiful handwriting, keeping notebooks clean, practicing perseverance and creativity; knowing how to perceive beauty along with the habit of diligence and hard work; at the same time creating a vibrant competitive atmosphere for this movement throughout the school.
In recent years, primary education in Can Tho City has been constantly developing, ensuring educational goals, demonstrated through the results of mass education and competitions at all levels. In particular, the beautiful handwriting competition has created a strong change in students in the movement of keeping notebooks clean and practicing beautiful handwriting. The city's Education Department continues to maintain and promote this movement. In fact, through the process of practicing handwriting, it helps students practice perseverance, dexterity, carefulness, and creativity to present neat notebooks, showing the beauty of Vietnamese handwriting; thereby also contributing to creating more passion for learning for students.
