Practicing beautiful handwriting is not only about writing neatly but also helps writers develop carefulness, patience, and dexterity. For many years, the Education Department of Can Tho City and its schools have consistently focused on and developed the "Keeping notebooks clean and practicing beautiful handwriting" movement.
Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Lien, a teacher at Nguyen Hue Primary School, is helping Do Quynh Huong practice handwriting at the school.
Every day at school, Do Quynh Huong, a 4th-grade student at Nguyen Hue Primary School (O Mon District), spends about 30 minutes in the afternoon practicing her beautiful handwriting with her homeroom teacher, Huynh Thi Kim Lien. At home, after studying and doing homework, Quynh Huong spends another 30 minutes meticulously writing poems and paragraphs, paying attention to the thickness and thinness of her strokes. She has maintained this habit consistently throughout her four years of schooling. Do Quynh Huong's passion and persistent efforts in practicing her handwriting helped her win third prize in the 2020-2021 school year and first prize in the 2022-2023 school year at the city-level beautiful handwriting competition.
Do Quynh Huong shared: “My teacher helped me practice writing, and I even created my own capital letters. I'm very happy to have won the prize and will continue practicing to make my handwriting even more beautiful. Practicing handwriting also helps me develop patience, diligence, and academic excellence.” Nguyen Thi Thuy Diem, Quynh Huong's mother, shared: “Huong has loved drawing and writing since first grade. Therefore, the family always creates opportunities for her to practice beautiful handwriting; such as arranging study time and space, buying notebooks and pens for her.”
Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Lien stated that the school's administration and teachers always support the beautiful handwriting movement. Students are very diligent and hardworking in their studies and handwriting practice. To help students write beautifully, several steps need attention during the handwriting practice process. First, they need to be trained to write correctly; second, they need to sit in the correct posture; and third, they must write correctly between strokes, then gradually improve their writing to be more fluid and creative. Ms. Lien said: “Practicing beautiful handwriting also helps students excel in other subjects, especially Literature. Because when handwriting practice is combined with essay writing, students also have a good foundation for other subjects, their notebooks are clearly presented, and they absorb knowledge better. In addition, it encourages them to develop their thinking, aesthetics, diligence, and passion for learning.” For many years, Nguyen Hue Primary School has had students win prizes in the city-level beautiful handwriting competition. In the 2022-2023 school year, under the guidance of Ms. Huynh Thi Kim Lien, 3 out of 4 students participated in and won high prizes in the city-level beautiful handwriting competition, with 1 first prize, 1 second prize, and 1 third prize.

The Can Tho City Beautiful Handwriting Contest for the 2022-2023 school year had 450 elementary school students participating. These were outstanding students with many achievements through the beautiful handwriting contest, selected from schools, districts, and counties in the city. The organizing committee awarded 180 individual prizes for high achievements (including 5 first prizes, 35 second prizes, and 55 third prizes). Le Thanh Du, a student in class 5A1, Tay Do Elementary School (Phong Dien district), one of the 5 first prize winners, shared: “To write beautifully, I chose a pen that fits my hand well and is lightweight. When practicing writing, I always pay attention to sitting in the correct posture, holding the pen correctly, and positioning the notebook to avoid spinal problems, nearsightedness, and to be able to write faster.” According to Thanh Du, teachers teach and encourage students to keep their notebooks clean and beautiful, correcting each stroke of the pen. Writing correctly, carefully, and neatly contributes to cultivating meticulousness in my studies and boosting my self-confidence.
According to Mr. Le Thanh Long, Head of the Primary Education Department of the Can Tho City Department of Education and Training, the "Keeping notebooks clean and practicing beautiful handwriting" movement is annually given attention and directed by management levels and schools in the area right from the beginning of the school year. This is done by assigning homeroom teachers to directly provide regular training during regular class hours and through Handwriting Clubs organized during the second class of the day for students with talent and interest in the subject. This is an opportunity for students to hone their handwriting skills, keep their notebooks clean, cultivate perseverance and creativity; develop an appreciation for beauty along with the habit of diligence and hard work; and at the same time create a lively competitive atmosphere for this movement throughout the school.
Over the years, primary education in Can Tho City has continuously developed, ensuring educational goals are met, as evidenced by the results of mass education and competitions at all levels. In particular, the beautiful handwriting competition has created a strong shift in students' habits regarding keeping notebooks clean and practicing beautiful handwriting. The city's Education Department continues to maintain and promote this movement. In reality, through the process of practicing handwriting, students develop perseverance, dexterity, carefulness, and creativity in presenting their notebooks neatly, showcasing the beauty of Vietnamese handwriting; this also contributes to fostering a passion for learning among students.
