If Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (Venerable Thich Chan Quang) used a fake high school diploma, will his university degree be confiscated?

On August 13, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that it had sent a dispatch to the Government Committee for Religious Affairs - Ministry of Home Affairs to verify the high school diploma of Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (Venerable Thich Chan Quang).

Accordingly, on July 30, the Department had a working session with the inspection team of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs - Ministry of Home Affairs to verify the learning process of Mr. Vuong Tan Viet. The Department coordinated with the inspection team to review all records, including the list of candidates who graduated from supplementary high school and the list of names and scores of all candidates who took the exam on June 6, 1989.

At the end of the inspection process, the Department confirmed the results of the review of the high school graduation exam records of Mr. Vuong Tan Viet, born in 1959, as follows: Not on the list of candidates and the score sheet in the 1989 supplementary high school graduation exam of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City; not on the list of candidates granted supplementary high school graduation certificates on June 6, 1989 of the Department of Education and Training of the city.

Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (aka Thich Chan Quang) did not take the exam and was not awarded a degree. However, in 2001, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Foreign Languages, now Hanoi University, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Law in 2019 from Hanoi Law University (second degree - study and work).

In 2021, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis at the Hanoi Law University and in 2022, he was awarded a doctoral degree in Constitutional and Administrative Law from Hanoi Law University. Mr. Vuong Tan Viet's successful defense of his doctoral thesis at Hanoi Law University in a period of 2 years and 3 months caused a stir in public opinion.

Will Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (Venerable Thich Chan Quang) have his undergraduate and graduate degrees revoked?

Regarding the case of Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (Venerable Thich Chan Quang), speaking with Dan Viet newspaper reporter on August 13, Dr. Nguyen Thi Cuc Phuong, Vice Principal of Hanoi University shared: "The school has just heard the news and is working with the Department of Education and Training."

Associate Professor Dr. To Van Hoa, Vice Principal of Hanoi Law University also said: "When there is an official document from the management agency, the school will carry out the procedures according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training."

Regarding the above information, Dr. Pham Hiep, co-head of the Education Innovation research group in Hanoi, affirmed: "If Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (Venerable Thich Chan Quang) used a fake high school diploma, the revocation of his university and graduate degrees is certain."

Through this, Dr. Pham Hiep also said that the verification of degrees at universities is still not strict.
