According to RT, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova talked about the reason why Mr. Zelensky wanted to meet directly with Russian President Putin. According to Ms. Maria Zakharova, Mr. Zelensky wanted to meet directly with President Putin to strengthen his legitimacy and counter efforts from the West to remove him from power.

It is known that Mr. Zelensky's presidential term ended in May 2024, but he refused to hold new elections on the grounds of martial law. Moscow considers Mr. Zelensky's remaining as President of Ukraine to be illegitimate.

In an interview with First Sevastopol TV broadcast on July 5, when asked why she thought Mr. Zelensky was so determined to meet Mr. Putin, Ms. Zakharova replied: “Because he (Zelensky) needs to reaffirm his legitimacy, not through legal procedures, but by any other means to prove that he is still in power.”

According to Ms. Zakharova, Mr. Zelensky also wanted to meet President Putin because he was haunted by "a terrible fear of being forgotten".

“He is extremely afraid of being forgotten, afraid of becoming unnecessary for the West, and afraid that the West will somehow marginalize him,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed.

Earlier in May, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said a meeting between Mr Putin and Mr Zelensky could take place, but only after talks between Moscow and Kiev reached "concrete agreements".
