Russia-Ukraine conflict update 10/1: Russia and the US may soon hold talks as signs indicate that both sides are moving forward in their positions on resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters at his Florida residence, US President-elect Donald Trump announced his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The politician emphasized that preparations are currently underway for this important meeting.
“ He (Russian President Vladimir Putin) wants to meet and we are making arrangements for it ,” Trump announced.
At the same time, the new US leader avoided directly answering the question of whether a trilateral meeting between the US, Russian, and Chinese leaders would take place. He said this would be determined later.
Mr. Trump has stated that he wants to meet Mr. Putin.
On January 7th, the US President-elect stated that he wanted to hold talks with Putin within the next six months.
" I hope to have negotiations within the next six months ," the US President-elect emphasized.

The politician also added that he was aware of the Russian leader's willingness to contact him: " I know Putin wants to meet. I don't think it's appropriate until the 20th ." Trump noted that he disliked the current conflict because so many young men and soldiers were becoming victims every day. However, he did not specify an approximate date for contact with the Russian leader.
In December 2024, Mr. Trump stated that he was looking forward to meeting with the Russian president to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
“ President Putin said he wants to meet me as soon as possible. So we’ll wait, we have to end that war ,” Trump said.
The Kremlin commented on the prospect of contact between Trump and Putin.
In late December 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Trump had not yet shown any inclination to contact the Russian leader.
Russian President's assistant for international affairs, Yuri Ushakov, said the Kremlin has received proposals from other countries to hold a meeting between Putin and Trump for peace talks.
“ We have received several proposals for a platform for negotiations between Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump from various countries. I won’t name these countries. However, it is noteworthy that such proposals have been made before and continue to be pursued, ” revealed the Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation for International Affairs.
Russia appreciates the plan to quickly end the conflict in Ukraine.
Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev expressed serious doubts about whether the US President-elect can quickly resolve the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, the politician did not begin his presidency in a boring manner. Medvedev believes that Trump's boisterous pronouncements, alongside doubts about a quick solution to the Ukraine conflict, are also explained by the "slow pace" of the US economy and the lack of prospects in the fight against migrants over the past years.

“ So, he simply decided to remake the world. That’s exactly what he wanted: to create a new geopolitical landscape in the style of Trump. A new, bright, and colorful sphere, very different from the current gray and dreary one. Every idea is projective and completely unrealistic ,” Dmitry Medvedev assessed.
Alexey Chepa, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, believes that Trump could help end the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, Russia hopes that the US leadership will stop supplying weapons to Ukraine and halt NATO's eastward advance.
