According to precious metals analyst James Hyerczyk from FX Empire, the main reason for the recent weakening of silver prices stems from a shift in expectations regarding the monetary policy of the US Federal Reserve (FED).

Previously, the market had bet on the possibility of the Fed lowering interest rates early this year. However, the current picture has reversed, with the futures market reflecting a 50/50 probability of the Fed raising interest rates again later this year. Many forecasts even suggest this possibility could increase next year.

According to Hyerczyk, investors tend to act before official policy decisions are made. Instead of waiting for the Fed to change its stance, market capital shifted early based on expectations that interest rates would remain high for longer than anticipated. This caused the upward momentum in silver, which had been fueled by expectations of monetary easing, to gradually lose its impetus.

Not only is the silver market under pressure from interest rate prospects, but it is also strongly impacted by the recovery of the US dollar. Expectations of higher interest rates continue to drive capital back into assets priced in the greenback, thereby pushing the USD index higher.

While silver is primarily traded in USD on international markets, the appreciation of the USD means that investors using the Euro, Japanese Yen, and other currencies have to pay more to buy the same amount of silver. This weakens global demand and puts further downward pressure on the price of this precious metal.

According to FX Empire experts, the price of silver is currently being simultaneously influenced by three major factors: the prospect of high interest rates, rising US bond yields, and the strength of the US dollar.

Furthermore, market sentiment also contributed to the more pronounced correction in silver prices. Between March and May, silver prices surged due to a series of expectations related to artificial intelligence (AI), energy transition, and demand from the high-tech industry. The influx of investors into the market, anticipating further price increases, contributed to the sharp rise in silver prices in the short term.
