Cyberattacks are targeting the construction sector in Southeast Asia.

The construction industry has always been one of the key factors determining a country's economic development. In Southeast Asia, this industry is on a strong growth trajectory with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.2% between 2024 and 2028.

Furthermore, the application of digital technologies such as AI and automation brings many great opportunities, helping to optimize operations in the construction sector. However, this rapid development also comes with significant cybersecurity risks. The latest data from Kaspersky in Q1 2025 shows that attacks on computers used in industrial control systems (ICS) at construction sites and factories are increasing, although most have been successfully prevented by industrial systems.

Compared to the global average, data from Southeast Asia shows that the rate of malware attacks on ICS computers in the following sectors is significantly higher; however, all attacks were successfully contained. Southeast Asia ranks second globally in the rate of malware containment on ICS computers, with a rate of 29.1%.

Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia Pacific (APAC) at Kaspersky, shared: “From 2025 onwards, digital industrial equipment could become targets of cyberattacks due to limitations from outdated security measures. The reliance of remote operations on inexpensive networking equipment is a vulnerability easily exploited by malicious actors. Therefore, the most urgent goal now is to update cybersecurity systems for older technologies. Most importantly, businesses need to take cybersecurity more seriously. This is not just an expense, but a crucial investment to ensure the continuity of all business operations.”

To minimize risks and enhance defenses against ICS threats, Kaspersky experts recommend: Regularly assessing the security of Operational Technology systems to promptly detect and eliminate cybersecurity vulnerabilities; establishing a continuous vulnerability assessment and classification process, laying the foundation for effective cybersecurity vulnerability management. Applying specialized solutions like Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity will provide effective support with practical action guidance – information that businesses often find incomplete in publicly available sources…
