More and more young people are developing rosacea.

Despite being 34 years old, Ms. Pham Hoang Lan (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) is still unable to use any cosmetics on her skin, even those advertised as "vegan" and non-irritating for sensitive skin.

After giving birth, her facial skin became even more sensitive, often reddening, burning, and feeling uncomfortable. "I really want to use skincare products to improve the signs of aging, but every cosmetic product I try causes irritation," shared Ms. Hoang Lan.

Regarding the above symptoms, Dr. Ngo Anh Tuan, Department of Dermatology and Cosmetic Dermatology, University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, said: "For most people, rosacea is still quite unfamiliar. The name of this disease may lead people to mistakenly believe that it is related to acne accompanied by redness of the skin."

However, this is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, unrelated to acne as we usually think of it. In rosacea, the blood vessels in the patient's skin show abnormalities, such as vasodilation and the release of neuroactive substances, causing paresthesia on the skin. The disease has many different forms."

Rosacea is typically studied in patients with white skin or those in Western countries. However, recent studies show that people of Asian and African descent are also experiencing an increasing incidence of rosacea.

"This increased detection rate may be due to advancements in dermatological diagnostic techniques, which have resulted in nearly equal diagnosis rates for rosacea across all races," shared Dr. Anh Tuan.

The cause of rosacea is believed to be genetic abnormalities; people with rosacea often have skin disorders. Rosacea is also linked to a type of bacteria that normally resides on the skin called Demodex, which everyone has. However, in people with the condition, the Demodex bacteria become overactive, causing the disease.

Women over 30 are at risk of developing this condition, which is most common between the ages of 40 and 50. Rosacea has many different forms, each with its own characteristics, and importantly, a person can have multiple forms at the same time.

Of the various forms of rosacea, the most common is the papular pustular form. Those with this form often mistake it for acne; the pustular papules are usually small, inflamed lesions in central areas of the face, leaving scars and causing cosmetic concerns.

"In patients with rosacea, this is not a condition caused by sebaceous gland blockage, but rather by chronic inflammation and immune cell disorders, so these pustular papules are not found in hair follicles and there are no hidden comedones," Dr. Anh Tuan emphasized.

In addition, other symptoms such as erythema and redness of the skin may occur. Each type of the disease has different symptoms and requires accurate diagnosis by a doctor. If the papular pustular form is not treated promptly, it can leave unsightly scars; while the erythematous form can cause itching, irritation, and discomfort. Patients with the erythematous form often have sensitive skin, and if not treated properly, their condition will be difficult to improve.
