Open-source AI helps drive economic growth

Within the framework of AI4VN, 3 thematic workshops took place in the morning. The opening workshop was "The Value of Open Source AI for Vietnam". Ms. Lisa Koh, Policy Program Manager and leader of Meta's AI and Innovation programs in the Asia- Pacific region, along with a team of experts, shared key research results from Meta and Linux Foundation on the economic and social value of open source AI in Vietnam. The program promoted interdisciplinary dialogue between management agencies, the private sector and institutes and schools in developing an open source AI ecosystem.

In addition, at this workshop, experts discussed issues such as: How Vietnam is leveraging the value of open source AI, what is the role of the government, what impact does it have on public sector applications, how businesses are implementing it and what challenges remain, and analyzed how open source AI can be customized for local needs.

Mr. Vo Xuan Hoai, Deputy Director of the National Innovation Center (NIC), shared how Vietnam is leveraging open-source AI in innovation, from data infrastructure, human resources to a collaborative environment between businesses, schools and the technology community. He also emphasized the role of management agencies in promoting this ecosystem.

Focusing on the business perspective, stating that AI, especially open source AI, helps increase productivity, promote business and economy, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Director of Technology, Director of MISA Joint Stock Company's Technology Institute, pointed out the challenges of cost, infrastructure, data and human resources when deploying LLM - large language model, thereby proposing solutions for businesses to effectively utilize this technology.

According to experts, open-source AI is expected to promote cross-industry dialogue to shape a favorable environment, helping AI become a growth driver and making Vietnam a regional innovation hub.

AI - a tool to support better teaching and training

With the topic of GenAI and the future of learning and teaching, at Workshop 2, experts discussed topics related to education in the AI era, including: Training elite AI human resources for Vietnam: Potential and challenges; Integrating GenAI ethics in Vietnamese education as well as discussing GenAI and future education. Participants included representatives of the Research and Development Center, British University Vietnam (BUV) and representatives of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research and Application (AI4LIFE).

One of the key questions raised is "Can GenAI replace some of the roles of lecturers, or become a supplementary tool?" In response to this issue, experts have analyzed how AI can take on repetitive tasks such as grading and building question banks, while lecturers still play a central role in terms of orientation, inspiration and development of critical thinking.

Considering that the application of GenAI in training programs still faces many barriers, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phi Le, lecturer at the School of Information and Communication Technology - Hanoi University of Science and Technology, analyzed the bottlenecks and pointed out a feasible roadmap for GenAI to be applied effectively and sustainably. From a research perspective, she also expressed her views on the role of institutes in orienting and building a suitable application framework, avoiding abuse or over-dependence on technology.

She asserted that AI cannot completely replace the role of teachers. However, AI will help analyze and process data, help manage schools better and detect problems that humans cannot detect.

From experience in developed countries, experts have introduced a number of models of applying GenAI to education that Vietnam can refer to. One topic that promises to attract attention is the ability to personalize learning through GenAI.

The final part of the panel focused on the question of “what will education look like in the future when GenAI becomes an integral part of the learning ecosystem?”. According to experts, this is an opportunity to make long-term predictions, from shaping the new roles of lecturers and students, to how the education system can be redesigned to take advantage of the power of artificial intelligence.

Open Source AI - The Right Trend to Invest in, Yet Challenging

Discussing the trend of applying AI in the field of Finance, at workshop 3, experts from HDBank and MoMo provided strategic perspectives and practical experience in implementing AI in digital banking activities, as well as issues of AI and financial security.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Technology Director, Director of the Institute of Technology of MISA Joint Stock Company, open source AI is the right trend to invest in. But there are still many challenges, especially computing infrastructure. Therefore, we need to rely on open source AI for better computing; especially need to invest in data and people.

He also said that experts in Vietnam have good technical skills, but limited connectivity. “Hopefully with an open ecosystem and a network of good experts in the coming time, we can go faster,” said Mr. Tung.
