At just after 1 PM, under the scorching sun in Quang Trung ward (Vinh City), Tran Van Minh, an air conditioner repairman, hurriedly ate a piece of dried rations while his hands were still covered in grease. That morning, he and his colleagues had completed the installation of two air conditioners for residents in an apartment complex in the ward. Without even taking a break, his team moved on to another apartment complex to complete two more orders.
"This season, if you work hard, you can find work every day. If you work diligently from morning till night, each person can earn about 1 million to 1.2 million VND per day," Minh shared.

The shortage of air conditioner technicians is not unique to Vinh City; it's also occurring in Dien Chau District. Nguyen Van Nam, an air conditioner repairman in Dien Ky Commune, said his team has been working almost non-stop since the beginning of April, when the weather started to turn hot.
"Customers call day and night, mostly for new air conditioner installations and maintenance, including refilling refrigerant for old units. Some days, we don't even have time for lunch because of the overwhelming number of orders. Although it's hard work, this is peak season, and we only rely on these few summer months for the rest of the year, so everyone is trying their best," said Nam.
According to surveys at electronics stores and repair services in Nghe An , the price for air conditioner maintenance and cleaning ranges around 200,000 VND per unit. Meanwhile, the installation fee for a new air conditioner ranges from 400,000 to 500,000 VND, depending on the difficulty and characteristics of the building. For high-rise buildings, requiring technicians to hang from balconies or climb ladders to install the outdoor unit makes the job even more dangerous and strenuous.
In Do Luong district, one of the areas with a large customer base during the summer, air conditioner sales and installation businesses are operating at full capacity. However, according to the owner of a large store there, the high demand means they can only accept a maximum of 5-6 orders per day, even though the number of calls for orders reaches 10-12.
"Some days the temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius, and air conditioner installers working outdoors from morning till evening are exhausted. Therefore, we also have to carefully select orders to ensure the safety and health of our workers," the business owner said.
The shortage of air conditioner technicians is also occurring in many remote and rural communes of Do Luong district, where access to services is limited. Due to the lack of manpower, many customers in these areas have to wait 2-3 days to have their air conditioners installed or repaired.
Currently, alongside legitimate air conditioner repair technicians, there are still many cases of people exploiting customers' lack of knowledge for personal gain. Many technicians do not hesitate to use tricks to "rip off" consumers, such as replacing electrical wires and copper pipes with low-quality ones and then charging exorbitant prices, or claiming low refrigerant levels to request additional refrigerant even when it is not necessary.
In reality, for air conditioners that are less than 5 years old, the main reason for poor performance is usually just accumulated dust and dirt, which only requires simple cleaning. However, some technicians intentionally "invent problems" by requesting a full inspection, then listing a series of faults such as low refrigerant, faulty circuit boards, burnt capacitors, compressor failure, etc., to drive up repair costs.
Therefore, before deciding to use air conditioner repair services, customers should take the time to research and compare prices from various sources, and prioritize choosing reputable repair shops. This not only helps to understand reasonable price levels but is also an effective way to avoid falling into the traps of unethical services that may overcharge.
Every summer, air conditioner technicians in Nghe An province embark on a "race against the heat, time, and energy." Despite facing hardship and danger, they diligently cling to their profession because it's not only their livelihood but also an opportunity to reap the rewards after months of less work.
