Việt NamViệt Nam28/06/2024

According to Dr. Nguyen Huy Anh, Deputy Head of the Infectious Diseases Department of the Nghe An Center for Disease Control (CDC Nghe An), from the beginning of 2024 to June 26, 2024, Nghe An province recorded 53 cases of measles in 12 localities.
Specifically, several localities recorded a high number of cases, including: Vinh City with 23 cases; Hung Nguyen district with 9 cases; Nghi Loc district with 5 cases; Nam Dan district with 4 cases; and Do Luong district with 2 cases. In addition, districts such as Quy Hop, Yen Thanh, Dien Chau, Tan Ky, Thanh Chuong, Quynh Luu, and Thai Hoa town also recorded measles cases.

Children with measles are being treated at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.

Statistics show that the majority of cases are among children under 5 years old (46 cases), 5 cases are between 5 and under 15 years old, and the remaining 2 cases are adults. The first case showed signs of onset in late March, followed by 16 cases in April, 14 cases in May, and 22 cases by June 26th, indicating a tendency for measles cases to increase in June.
Regarding measles vaccination history, there were 16 cases of children who were underage for vaccination, and out of 35 children who were old enough for measles vaccination, only 7 cases (20%) had been vaccinated (6 children received 1 dose, 1 child received 2 doses).
Given the increasing trend in measles cases, the Nghe An CDC has requested the Health Centers of districts, towns, and Vinh City to implement comprehensive and decisive measles prevention and control activities. This includes ensuring safe and effective routine vaccination for those covered by the Expanded Immunization Program (EIP); and reviewing and organizing catch-up vaccinations for individuals who have not been vaccinated or have not received all doses of the measles and measles-rubella vaccine.
People are advised to effectively implement disease prevention measures as recommended by the health sector, especially ensuring children receive measles vaccinations on schedule and with the correct dosage. If symptoms suggestive of or confirmed, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility for examination and treatment.
Speaking with reporters, Vo Manh Hung, Head of the Tropical Diseases Department at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, informed that the unit is currently treating 5 pediatric measles patients, with cases from both Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces. According to reports, none of the cases are severe, and the children are currently receiving intensive treatment in the isolation area. If measles is detected and treated early, each child will only need one week of treatment before being discharged.

The Nghe An CDC further reported that, according to a report from the National Children's Hospital, since the beginning of the year, the hospital has recorded 4 cases of measles in Nghe An province that have been treated at the hospital. One case is from Dien Tho commune (Dien Chau district), an 8-month-old child. Notably, this child had not been vaccinated against measles because they were not old enough to receive the vaccine. This is also the first case in Dien Chau district in the past 6 months.
The child was being treated at the infectious disease ward of the National Children's Hospital on April 21st with symptoms including a persistent high fever for several days, runny nose, cough with phlegm, diarrhea, and scattered red rashes around the ears, eyes, and body. Initial epidemiological investigations identified an external source of infection, and no new cases have been detected in the child's place of residence.
Immediately after receiving information about this case, the Dien Chau District Health Center dispatched an epidemiological investigation team and implemented disease prevention measures in the community. A working group from the Nghe An CDC, led by Dr. Nguyen Trong Di, Deputy Head of the Infectious Disease Control Department, visited Dien Tho commune, Dien Chau district, to monitor the measles case.
The inspection team requested that the District Health Center and local Party Committees and authorities continue to strengthen the implementation of disease prevention and control measures to prevent the spread of the disease. They emphasized the need for close monitoring, timely reporting of cases, review of vaccination targets, and implementation of catch-up measles vaccinations for children. Furthermore, they stressed the importance of strengthening communication efforts to raise public awareness about disease prevention and control.
