From the 2025-2026 school year, the traditional musical instrument performer - leader of the Nam Toc Dru Nam band (Do Hoang Nam) and a number of other artists will return to Phu Tho Primary School (District 11, Ho Chi Minh City) to teach and popularize knowledge and skills in using traditional percussion instruments for students.

That is one of the contents of the signed contract to coordinate the popularization of traditional percussion instruments for primary school students between Phu Tho Primary School and Van Anh Cultural Company Limited (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City). The signing ceremony took place yesterday (May 16) to delight the students, and at the same time marked the beginning of schools boldly inviting artists to schools to teach students about art.

Teach 35 weeks a year

According to the signed minutes, students of Phu Tho Primary School will be taught by artists of Van Anh Cultural Company Limited such as Dan Bau - T'rung artist Van Anh, traditional musical instrument performer - leader of Nam Toc Dru Nam music group (Do Hoang Nam)... according to the program during 35 weeks of actual study in the 2025 - 2026 school year with a duration of 1 period/week/class.

In addition to the music content of the 2018 general education program (because the school is currently lacking music teachers), the artists will popularize knowledge and skills in using traditional percussion instruments (such as clappers, song loan, wooden fish, cymbals, small drums...) for the school's students.

On the morning of May 16, many artists came to the school to perform before the signing ceremony. Drum Festival, One Round of Vietnam, Bac Bling... Every song and piece of music made the schoolyard bustling and exciting as the students joined in singing and tapping along with the artists with the instruments in hand.

Huynh Tran Son Bach, a student in class 3/2 of the school, happily said: "This morning, my teacher gave me a set of bamboo clappers, and I kept singing and tapping them. I have sung about 10 songs so far, and I really like each one." Therefore, when Bach learned that he would be taught by these artists next school year, he felt very happy.

Also holding a set of clappers in her hand, Diep Bao Nghi, a student in class 1/6, was happy to learn that from next school year, artists will teach her music in class and teach her traditional musical instruments.

"I like the T'rung and today I saw Ms. Van Anh perform very well. I want to learn more about this instrument as well as many other musical instruments. I'm so happy that in the future I can learn music from my teachers," Bao Nghi excitedly said.

Spread the love of folk music

Talking about inviting artists to teach music to students in the 2018 general education program and popularizing traditional percussion instruments for the school's students throughout the next school year, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Huong, the school's principal, said that the school boldly followed the instructions of General Secretary To Lam .

"The school is currently lacking a music teacher. For the past few years, the school has recruited many times but failed to find a teacher. Now, the General Secretary's directive is like giving us a way out. And this way out creates many emotions and interests for students in learning music and art.

Looking at the passionate eyes and questions that the students asked the artists about the instruments, we saw that inviting artists to the school would definitely bring positive effects to teaching music at the school," said Ms. Kim Huong.

Also according to Ms. Kim Huong, in the first year of implementing the teaching contract with the artists, the school focused on popularizing traditional percussion instruments for students so that they could understand and nurture their love for traditional music culture, nurture their love for their homeland as well as help them discover their own musical talents.

"Primary school age is truly an age of nurturing talent. Letting children come into contact with musical instruments early through contact with professional artists will inspire them to explore themselves. Therefore, I have high hopes for the positive improvement of the quality of music teaching in schools by inviting teachers who are professional artists to teach in the upcoming classes," Ms. Huong shared.

Artist Van Anh (Le Thi Van Anh), director of Van Anh Cultural and Commercial Company Limited, said that for a long time she and many artists of the company have been invited to perform by many schools, but this is the first time the company has signed a long-term teaching contract for a school year with a school.

"I graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, a professional musician on the monochord, can play 7 other musical instruments such as the monochord, T'rung, drums, percussion instruments... and have performed in many places in and outside the country.

But when I first signed a teaching contract with a school, I was really happy. Because I dream of spreading folk music to the younger generations, so that folk music can be passed down forever and be the foundation for students to love their homeland more, and be proud of their birthplace," said artist Van Anh.

Artist Dru Nam (leader of Nam Toc music group):

Happy, proud

When I was invited to the school to teach the students, I felt happy and proud. I hope to be able to instill in them a love for traditional music as well as enrich their love for their homeland through music, helping them gain more musical skills so that they can increasingly perfect their souls, nurturing positive and healthy emotions in life.

Good news

According to an official from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, teaching music in schools in Ho Chi Minh City through clubs has been done for decades. However, inviting artists to teach is very rare.

"The fact that schools invite professional artists to teach students is a welcome sign, good news for students," he commented.
