In 2021, Ms. Vu Thi Dung, from Yen Bai ward, Lao Cai province, received a diagnosis of stage 3 lung cancer. After 8 months of treatment at the Central Lung Hospital, but with surgery not possible, the doctors advised her to go home.

Refusing to surrender to fate, she decided to overcome her illness on her own. After spending many days researching on social media, learning about successful "comeback" stories, meticulously studying nutrition, rest, and how to use willpower to conquer the disease, she discovered running – a seemingly simple method but one that possesses the power to heal both physically and mentally.
At that very moment, she knew she had found her way and began her first, difficult steps the following morning.
Dung's running journey began in solitude and skepticism. Friends and family were worried, even strongly opposed, because for a lung cancer patient, breathing was already difficult, and choosing this sport that demanded such tremendous endurance was unacceptable.
"Initially, no one believed I could run. But I persevered, running 100 steps, then walking, resting, and then running again," Ms. Dung recounted.
The image of the frail woman, struggling to breathe on the streets, stopping and then trying to run again, is a testament to her extraordinary willpower. She has set an iron discipline for herself: never give up, not even for a single day.

At that time, she wasn't running on breath, but on the will to survive. Gradually, a miracle happened; the walking distances became less frequent, and the running distances increased. In the first, second, and then third month, she was able to run 5 km without stopping. Her breathing also became more regular, no longer rapid, with no chest tightness or discomfort. At that moment, she knew she had conquered herself and regained control of her life.
As her health gradually improved, Ms. Dung joined the Yen Bai Runner Club to learn more about running techniques and expand her social circle.
Hoang Duc Chien, a member of the Yen Bai Runner Club, shared: "I've participated in many running races with Ms. Dung. Some races took place in unfavorable weather conditions, with challenging courses, but she always strived to finish alongside the top female athletes who were in good health."
After just four months of dedicated training, she transformed from a frail and sickly woman into someone who bravely registered to participate in and conquer the 42 km (Full Marathon).
Even more astonishing, Ms. Dung finished with an impressive time: 42 km in approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes.
Also at that tournament, the story of runner Vu Thi Dung, who overcame illness to complete the 42 km race, became an endless source of inspiration in the running community.

After four years of running and a healthy , balanced diet, Ms. Vu Thi Dung's health is now stable. She maintains a regular exercise routine and keeps herself motivated and disciplined in her running.
Every step she takes is an affirmation: We have the right to choose how we live, even when facing the line between life and death.
Dung runs not only to improve her health, but also to live her passion to the fullest.

Through sheer willpower, she not only conquered cancer but also overcame despair, fear, and her own limitations.
With each step she took on the Full Marathon race, she rewrote the "definition" of life, proving that unwavering willpower is one of the most effective remedies.
