Edouard refused to play for Haiti at the World Cup. |
While more and more players are choosing to switch national teams to seek opportunities in major tournaments, Odsonne Edouard is taking the opposite approach.
The Lens striker has confirmed he declined an offer to join the Haiti national team for the 2026 World Cup, despite having a strong chance of being included in the final squad. The 28-year-old's reason is not related to professional or personal matters, but stems from his belief in fairness in football.
"I can't just show up at the last minute to reap the rewards of what others have already achieved. If I want to play in the World Cup, I have to earn it myself," Edouard explained.
Haiti has just made history by qualifying for the World Cup for the second time. The Caribbean team is in a group with Brazil, Scotland, and Morocco. Edouard believes that the spot in the tournament should go to the players who have been with the team throughout the qualifying campaign.
The former PSG and Celtic striker's stance quickly garnered praise from fans. In the modern era of football, where players often seize every opportunity to appear on the world's biggest stage, Edouard's decision is considered quite rare.
Nevertheless, the French striker still has his own goals. He has played for the French youth teams and still hopes to one day make his debut for the national team.
Last season, Edouard scored 14 goals in 36 matches for Lens, helping the team win the French Cup and qualify for the Champions League. Instead of taking shortcuts to the World Cup, the 28-year-old striker chose to continue waiting for his opportunity in what he believes is most deserved.
