From 4am, Mr. Nguyen Van Thang (Dong Xa commune, Van Don district) had his workers harvest 10 oyster cages in the Soi Nhu island area in time for traders to check the quality of the samples before placing large purchase orders. The entire oyster area was restored by his family in October 2024, after storm No. 3 made landfall in Quang Ninh.
Up to now, after more than 7 months, his family's mollusk farming area has met the standards for harvesting. Mr. Thang said: After inspection, the oysters have ensured the quality according to the customer's requirements. Immediately after that, I will let the workers harvest with a quantity of several hundred tons/day. With an area of 10 hectares, it is expected that from now until the end of June and July this year, the family will have nearly 300 tons of commercial oysters for sale. With a stable purchase price of 15,000 VND/kg, it will help the family have the resources to continue reproducing the new crop this year.
In March and April, the harvested aquaculture output of Van Don district reached over 7,000 tons, mainly mollusks. In particular, the harvested output in April doubled compared to the previous month. Currently, the supply of mollusks for the consumer market is not much because the new farming area of fishermen has not reached the time of harvest. Therefore, the purchase price compared to the same period in previous years has increased 2-3 times.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Canh, Van Don Milk Oyster Cooperative, said: My rafts have been harvested since the beginning of April. Generally, we rotate, after harvesting this raft, we harvest another raft. The fry are purchased and raised in advance, so we also arrange manpower to plant the fry immediately to keep up with the time. Currently, on average, my family harvests 200 cages per day, averaging 42kg/cage, so 100 cages, yielding more than 800 tons.
