- Currently, the prolonged hot and humid weather poses a high risk of rabies outbreaks. In light of this situation, relevant authorities and agencies in the province have been actively implementing comprehensive measures to prevent and control rabies in livestock.
Rabies is an infectious disease caused by the rabies virus. It is transmitted from infected animals (primarily dogs and cats) to humans through saliva from bites, scratches, or licks on damaged skin or mucous membranes. According to statistics from the Provincial Center for Disease Control, in the first five months of 2026, over 3,000 people in the province received rabies vaccinations from dogs and cats at medical facilities. Therefore, along with vaccinating people bitten by dogs and cats, the province's specialized agencies are also paying close attention to rabies prevention and control in dogs and cats.

Dong Kinh Ward is one of the areas with a rabies vaccination rate of over 80% for dogs and cats. Mr. Ha Van Tu, a veterinarian at the Dong Kinh Ward Public Service Center, said: "To achieve high results in rabies vaccination, we have developed a plan, compiled statistics, and reviewed the number of dogs and cats eligible for vaccination. We have also intensified propaganda and mobilization efforts to raise awareness among pet owners and encourage them to proactively vaccinate their animals against the disease. Thanks to effective vaccination efforts, in recent years there have been no new high-risk areas in the ward, and the livestock population has remained stable and healthy."
Along with vaccination efforts, many communes and wards are also focusing on managing dog and cat populations and raising public awareness in rabies prevention and control. Mr. Hoang Van Tang, Director of the Public Service Center of Khanh Khe commune, said: The unit has intensified propaganda through the public address system and at village meetings about the risks and harms of rabies. At the same time, they have organized rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats and encouraged people to sign commitments to manage their pets and not let dogs roam freely in public places... This has reduced the risk of rabies outbreaks in the area.
Not only the two aforementioned communes/wards, but all communes/wards in the province are currently urgently implementing rabies vaccination for dogs and cats. According to statistics, from the beginning of the year to June 3, 2026, the entire province has administered 30,078 doses of rabies vaccine to dogs and cats, achieving over 60% of the annual plan.
Mr. Duong Doan Doanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries, said: To effectively prevent and control rabies, the department has coordinated with the public service centers of communes and wards to review and compile statistics on the dog and cat population to support vaccination; organized extensive propaganda through various forms in residential communities, agencies, units and schools about the dangerous nature of rabies, the signs of rabies in animals; effective rabies prevention measures and legal regulations on rabies prevention and control...
Ms. Hoang Thi Vien from Yen Phuc commune shared: "After being informed and encouraged by the commune's veterinary officers, my family realized the seriousness of rabies infection and had our dogs vaccinated against rabies. Now, I and the children in my family feel safer when interacting with pets."
Thanks to the coordinated implementation of various solutions, since the beginning of 2026, no cases of rabies in dogs or cats have been recorded in the province.
Rabies is a dangerous disease, but it is entirely preventable with proper measures such as vaccination and strict pet management. Besides the decisive involvement of relevant authorities at all levels, people also need to proactively report and manage their pets and ensure their dogs and cats are fully vaccinated against rabies, thereby contributing to minimizing the outbreak of rabies and protecting public health.
