New recruit Tran Bao Son, Company 1, Battalion 4 (Regiment 5), shared: “While checking my shooting skills, the Regiment Commander meticulously corrected my posture, held my hand, and guided me on loading ammunition and aiming… That closeness and dedication helped us progress very quickly.”
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Phong's dedicated and responsible approach has become a familiar image to the officers and soldiers of Regiment 5 over the past period. As a key unit with high training intensity and combat readiness, Regiment 5 faces many pressures, difficulties, and challenges. In his capacity as Regiment Commander from 2025 to the present, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Phong, together with the Party Committee and the unit's command, has implemented many comprehensive and effective solutions.
One of the outstanding solutions is to promote the exemplary role of the officers. Accordingly, the Regiment strictly maintains the discipline of "officers staying close to the training ground and closely involved with the troops." From squad leaders to regimental commanders, all directly participate in training, eating, living, and training alongside the soldiers. This approach not only improves the quality of training but also helps officers promptly understand the thoughts and concerns of the troops at the grassroots level and effectively resolve their difficulties and problems.

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Phong consistently adheres to the training motto "Basic, practical, and solid," ensuring substantive training, thorough testing, and realistic evaluation of results. He directs the development of specific plans for each task, assigning officers clear responsibilities, expected outcomes, and deadlines. Difficult, new, or potentially unsafe topics are given focused training for officers before training begins; simultaneously, the unit categorizes soldiers to determine appropriate training content and methods.
After each training session, the units held debriefing sessions right on the training ground, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each team and individual so that the soldiers could quickly overcome shortcomings. Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Phong also regularly personally attended the most difficult and stressful training sessions to train alongside, encourage, and share with the officers and soldiers. The commander's exemplary conduct created motivation and a high sense of responsibility for all officers and soldiers in the unit.
Along with improving training quality, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Phong paid special attention to building a regular and disciplined system. He directed that troop management must closely combine strictness with closeness and understanding of the soldiers. As a result, many effective models were implemented, such as: "One rule per week," and "One disciplinary situation per day," using concise, easy-to-remember, and easy-to-implement formats.

Thanks to comprehensive and decisive solutions, in 2025, Regiment 5 was awarded the Emulation Flag by the Command of Military Region 7; the Regiment's Party Committee successfully completed its tasks. In the 2026 new recruit training, the Regiment achieved excellent results in grenade throwing accuracy and explosive handling (exercise 1); achieved good results in STV-380 rifle shooting (exercise 1); and maintained a safe and disciplined unit.
For his outstanding contributions, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Phong has been commended by the Command of Military Region 7 for many consecutive years. In particular, in 2025, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Military Region for his excellent achievements in activities commemorating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd.
