On the afternoon of January 28th, the price of SJC gold bars was listed by gold companies at 180.7 million VND/ounce for buying and 183.2 million VND/ounce for selling, a further increase of 2.6 million VND/ounce compared to the morning.
Many people are selling gold as prices reach their peak.
In just one day, the price of SJC gold bars increased by nearly 6 million VND per tael. The rising gold price spurred people to sell their gold to lock in profits. At SJC company, employees said that many people were selling their gold as prices continuously reached new highs.
However, many people have contacted the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper to inquire whether they need to bring a receipt when selling SJC gold bars at this time, especially for SJC gold bars purchased many years ago.
Ms. Ngoc Ngan (residing in Ho Chi Minh City) said that she had previously purchased SJC gold bars, but due to storage, the receipt was lost. She is worried that if she needs to sell the gold and cannot present the receipt, she will face trouble, and may even risk having the gold bars confiscated, as stipulated in the new Decree 340/2025/ND-CP, effective from February 9th, which regulates administrative penalties for violations in the monetary and banking sector.
Decree 340/2025/ND-CP specifies very clearly the handling of acts of producing, trading, buying, selling, exporting, and importing gold bars and raw gold without a license. Gold bars may be confiscated if transactions are conducted without a license.
This applies only to business organizations and individuals.
Lawyer Nguyen Thanh Ha, Chairman of SBLAW law firm, analyzed Article 28 of Decree 340/2025, which clearly states that the supplementary penalty of confiscating gold is only applied to business-related activities, including the production, trading, and sale of gold bars without a license; the export and import of raw gold and gold bars without a license; or other gold business activities without a license from the competent authority.
"The main target of this regulation is organizations and individuals engaging in illegal gold trading activities, not those who legally store, wear, or use gold in their daily lives or in ordinary civil transactions that are not of a commercial nature."
"For small-scale exchanges and sales between individuals, if they are not for regular business purposes, are not organized as commercial activities, and do not violate other legal regulations, then in principle they are not considered illegal gold trading activities subject to confiscation," lawyer Nguyen Thanh Ha clarified.

SJC Company affirms that it continues to purchase SJC gold bars as per its previous policy, and there is no requirement for an invoice.
However, individuals who buy or sell gold bars with organizations that do not have a gold trading license, or who participate in transactions that appear to be organized, frequent, or of a commercial nature, may be subject to administrative penalties and additional measures as prescribed by law.
Therefore, lawyer Nguyen Thanh Ha advises that, to avoid the risk of penalties or confiscation, people buying and selling small quantities of gold bars, such as 1-2 taels, should conduct transactions at businesses and credit institutions licensed by the State Bank of Vietnam to trade gold bars, keep all legal invoices and documents, and avoid participating in transactions of unknown origin or "hand-to-hand" transactions outside the licensed system.
Regarding the question of whether people selling SJC gold bars need to bring a receipt, on the afternoon of January 28th, in an exchange with a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper , a representative of Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) stated that the company continues to buy SJC gold bars as usual, if they are genuine, and no receipt is required.
At Sacombank Gold and Gemstone Company (SBJ), company staff said that if customers sell SJC gold bars with the same serial number as those sold by the company, they will be able to buy them back.
Why does SBJ only buy back SJC gold bars sold by SBJ? An employee explained that due to the current prevalence of counterfeit gold bars, SBJ will verify if the gold bar matches the serial number previously sold in the past – and then repurchase it.

The price of SJC gold bars exceeded 183 million VND/ounce this afternoon.
