(NLDO) - In the early days of the Year of the Snake (2015), tens of thousands of people flocked to the Ong Hoang Muoi Temple each day to pray for peace and good fortune.
From January 29th (the first day of the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake) to February 1st (the fourth day of the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake), an average of tens of thousands of locals and tourists from all over the country visited the Ong Hoang Muoi Temple in Hung Thinh commune, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province each day to offer incense and prayers.
According to folklore, Hoang Muoi is a legendary figure, sent to earth to help humanity. The people of Nghe An also pass down legends about the origins, background, and achievements of Hoang Muoi, comparing him to real historical figures in Vietnamese history.
According to folklore, Ông Hoàng Mười was the son of King Bát Hải Động Đình, originally a celestial official in the Imperial Court, a deity in the Peach Blossom Paradise. By order of the Heavenly Court, he descended to earth to help the people and the country. However, according to accounts from the Hà Tĩnh region, Ông Hoàng Mười was actually Lê Khôi, a talented general, the nephew and follower of Lê Lợi in the ten-year resistance war against the Ming army.
According to another legend, he descended to earth and became Uy Minh Vương Ly Nhật Quang, son of King Lý Thái Tổ, who ruled Nghệ An province. Besides worshipping Ông Hoàng Mười, the temple also venerates benevolent deities: Lê Khôi, Quận công Trịnh Trung, Song Đồng Ngọc Nữ, and the Four Palaces Mother Goddess religion, headed by Thánh Mẫu Liễu Hạnh.
For many years, the Ong Hoang Muoi Temple has been a spiritual destination for tens of thousands of people nationwide during the Lunar New Year. Ms. Tran Thi Ha, a visitor from Hanoi , shared: "The Ong Hoang Muoi Temple is very sacred. Every year, during the Lunar New Year, my whole family comes here to light incense and pray for a peaceful, lucky, and happy new year."
