The last days of the year, the weather starts to get cold, which is also the time when the roads running through residential groups 5, 4B, 2B of Dak Ha town "put on" a "new coat". Along both sides of the road, there are thousands of pots of chrysanthemums growing well, planted by people, lit with lights so that the flowers bloom in time for Tet.
Early in the morning, when the sky was still covered with mist, Mr. Diep Thanh Dat (resident of residential group 5, Dak Ha town) was busy with his work in the flower garden. To serve the Tet market this year, from the beginning of the 9th lunar month, Mr. Dat planted 3,500 pots of chrysanthemums. Thanks to good application of planting and care techniques, Mr. Dat's chrysanthemum garden grew and developed well.
According to Mr. Dat, growing chrysanthemums is not hard work but requires many steps such as: preparing the soil, planting seeds, watering, fertilizing, weeding, planting, and lighting. All steps require the grower to be patient and meticulous. Only then will the flowers grow well and bloom in time for Tet.
“Currently, my family is focusing on taking care of the flower garden. This is the time to pay attention to lighting so that the flowers bloom at the right time and the nutrition and humidity for the plants to grow best, ensuring the quality of the flowers,” said Mr. Dat.
Nearby, Mr. Diep Hong Thai (resident of residential group 4B) is also busy watering each flower pot. Hoping for a good price for Tet flowers, this year Mr. Thai's family planted 4,000 pots of chrysanthemums, 1,000 pots more than last year.
To help the chrysanthemums grow well, with large and firm flowers, Mr. Thai regularly fertilizes and waters the plants. In addition, Mr. Thai also applies the method of lighting to stimulate the growth of the plants. Thanks to that, the flowers will grow taller, have straight stems, and bloom right on Tet holiday.
“This year, the weather has been favorable, so there are few pests and diseases on the flowers, so I have reduced some of the cost of buying pesticides. Hopefully, from now until Tet, the weather will continue to be favorable so that we flower growers can have complete joy,” said Mr. Thai.
In village 1, Dak Mar commune, Mr. Vu Quang Thanh is hurriedly stripping leaves and pruning branches for his peach garden. Having been involved in the peach blossom growing profession for more than 20 years, Mr. Thanh knows the characteristics of this flower by heart.
According to Mr. Thanh, to have a beautiful peach tree with even branches, many buds and blooming in time for Tet, the care process must be skillful and meticulous at all stages. From choosing healthy seeds, nutritious soil to caring, fertilizing, and watering in a balanced way, suitable for each stage and weather conditions. In addition, growers also need proficient techniques such as stripping leaves to "force" the peach tree to bud, "promoting" or "restraining" so that the tree has many buds, large buds, bright colors, and flowers blooming at the right time.
According to Mr. Thanh, stripping leaves is the most important step, requiring carefulness and meticulousness from the grower. Stripping leaves must be done at the right time so that the peach can develop buds and nourish the peach buds, producing large, beautiful flower buds. It is necessary to base on each peach variety, the weather as well as the development of each tree to determine the time to strip leaves so that the tree can bud and bloom in time for Tet. Stripping leaves aims to help the tree concentrate nutrients to create buds, ensuring that the buds grow abundantly, evenly, the flowers are large, the petals are thick, and the color is beautiful.
“Peach growing is not only labor-intensive but also requires meticulousness and perseverance. To create a peach tree with a beautiful shape and well-developed branches, the grower must spend at least 2 years taking care of it. At the same time, one must have experience and high techniques to create trees with unique shapes and forms from simple, rough peach roots at first,” Mr. Thanh added.
Mr. Thanh currently has more than 7,000 peach trees, mainly in the shape of water hyacinth, dragon shape, and curved shape. Currently, Mr. Thanh's peach garden is 2 years old, has a beautiful shape, is growing well, and will be sold on the market during Tet this year.
The Tet flower market in Dak Ha district this year is forecast to be more positive as at this time, many gardeners said that up to 30% of the pots have been ordered by traders. This is a good sign, bringing hope for a successful flower crop for flower and ornamental plant growers in the district.
