Buckwheat flowers in the heart of the city

In previous years, Mr. Bui Van Hai's family in Xuan Dong quarter, Tan Thien ward, Dong Xoai city only grew flowers to sell during Tet. This year, he built a garden to grow many special flowers to attract young people to check in and take pictures. The first highlight is the buckwheat flower beds - a typical flower in the Northeastern provinces, especially in Ha Giang province. Buckwheat flower season is usually in the last months of the year and is suitable for cold weather. However, after researching, Mr. Hai tried planting them in his home garden and the results were surprising. “At first, I was also worried, not knowing if planting in Dong Xoai City was suitable? Because the climate here is quite hot compared to the Northeast region. I wanted to know if I had to try, so I contacted to buy seeds to plant. Surprisingly, after sowing the seeds, the germination rate was high. The first flower buds appeared, making my belief in success even greater. I learned how to take care of them, so now the flower beds are growing very strongly. The flowers bloom for more than a month and then wither. I timed the planting so that the flowers bloom brilliantly right on the occasion of this Lunar New Year,” Hai shared.

In the garden of Mr. Bui Van Hai's family, Xuan Dong quarter, Tan Thien ward, Dong Xoai city, there are many kinds of colorful flowers, meeting the needs of people to enjoy and take photos.

According to Mr. Hai, buckwheat flowers have very unique colors. When they first bloom, they are mainly white and light pink. Near Tet, when the temperature drops and the air is colder, the flowers will have the main colors of purple and dark pink. This interesting color change has made the natural landscape more beautiful. Many people love this flower and come to the faraway Ha Giang province to see it. Therefore, Mr. Hai planted buckwheat flowers, bringing the spring atmosphere of Ha Giang right into his home garden, for flower lovers to come and enjoy and take pictures.

Besides buckwheat, Mr. Hai's garden has many other flowers, which are usually only found in the cold land of Da Lat. The brilliant colors of the flowers and the miniature landscapes that his family has meticulously built create a unique and romantic space right in the heart of Dong Xoai city.

Be creative to be different

Sticking with the profession of growing Tet flowers, this year Mr. Phan Quang Vinh in Xuan Dong quarter, Tan Thien ward continues to invest tens of millions of dong to pursue his passion. Mr. Vinh said that every year his family grows about 5,000 flower pots of all kinds, mainly selling in the garden and retailing at Dong Xoai spring flower market. This year, with the same main varieties as rough-leaf chrysanthemum, morning chrysanthemum, French marigold and sunflower, Mr. Vinh creates a difference in each pot mold. "Instead of planting in monotonous plastic or cement pots like previous years and many gardeners often do, this year, I bought many molds to cast flower pots in the shape of cute, unique animals such as elephants, horses, pigs, chickens... These flower pots are intended for buyers to display in early summer, indoors, in the living room, on the tea table, or on the desk," Mr. Vinh shared.

Unlike other farmers in the neighborhood, Mr. Bui Van Duc, Vinh's neighbor, makes a difference by growing fragrant rice in plastic pots to sell during Tet. Mr. Duc said that over the years, when going to the Tet market, he observed that there were very few places selling rice for display. According to him, rice is a food crop, closely associated with Vietnamese people for generations. Displaying rice during Tet symbolizes abundance, so this year, in addition to flowers, he planted nearly 500 pots of fragrant rice to sell. These days, the rice has bloomed, and its fragrance is lingering.

Visiting some models and products of farmers serving the Lunar New Year market of At Ty 2025, Ms. Pham Thi Yen Linh, President of the Farmers' Association of Dong Xoai City, highly appreciated the creativity of farmers in diversifying models and products for sale during Tet. Ms. Linh said that this year the Tet market situation is unpredictable. Therefore, the Farmers' Association of Dong Xoai City regularly advises farmers to produce products according to market demand. The Association has requested the agricultural product supply and consumption team to promote and introduce farmers' products on Zalo and Facebook groups so that the community knows and has many choices, and is ready to implement plans to help farmers consume products effectively.
