Rebuilding your life
On a November morning, amidst the noise of construction work in front of his house, Ly Van Do (28 years old) diligently worked as a laborer, his shirt soaked with sweat, but his face beamed with a bright smile. Few knew that not long ago, Do was a trainee at the No. 2 Drug Rehabilitation Center in An Giang province. Thanks to his good conduct and determination to rebuild his life, he was released three months early compared to his 12-month rehabilitation period. In October 2025, upon returning to his hometown, Do had withdrawn into silence, afraid of the stares of his neighbors.
Understanding this, members of the Thuận Tiến hamlet's veteran association visited Do's home many times to offer encouragement. Thanks to this support, Do gradually stabilized his spirits and now works as a construction laborer, earning over 300,000 VND per day. "I want to learn mechanics and borrow money to buy tools so I can provide for my three young children and ease the burden on my parents," Do shared.
Also influenced by his past actions, Mr. Tran Van Um (62 years old), who had been imprisoned, has now become a diligent farmer. After serving his prison sentence, he received support from the Veterans Association of the commune to borrow 50 million VND to rent 10 acres of land for rice cultivation and grow 1.2 hectares of cassava around his house. Although the soil is acidic and the yield is not high, thanks to his hard work, he earns nearly 70 million VND in profit each year, and his family's life is stable.
"Having work every day, I feel useful. Thanks to the trust of the veterans, I must try even harder not to let them down," Mr. Um said enthusiastically. Two people, two different circumstances, but both rediscovered their faith in life thanks to the close bond with the soldiers of Uncle Ho.
Maintaining peace in the village
Binh Son commune was once a hotspot for security and order issues, with frequent cockfighting, gambling, and illegal street racing. In response to this, in 2018, the commune's Veterans Association, in coordination with the commune's police, departments, and organizations in Thuan Tien hamlet, established a Veteran Civil Defense Team to participate in maintaining security and order and preventing crime. The goal was to uphold the spirit of Uncle Ho's soldiers in peacetime.
Mr. Ngo Thanh Tuan, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Binh Son commune, said: "This model not only maintains security and order but also demonstrates the role and prestige of veterans in mobilizing the public and rehabilitating offenders. Thanks to this, people trust and proactively cooperate with the government in crime prevention at the grassroots level."
Since its establishment, the community patrol team has maintained an average of 25 patrols per year, with more than 50 members participating; they have warned and dispersed 7 illegal cockfighting and gambling dens and rehabilitated 4 individuals to reintegrate into the community… The veterans also integrate legal education into self-governing community group meetings, encouraging people to abide by the law and not harbor or condone violations.
Deputy Head of Thuan Tien Hamlet, Le Van Hoang, said that the hamlet has 924 households, 96% of families meet cultural standards, and the security and order situation has seen an 80% reduction in complex incidents compared to before. "The veterans speak and the people listen, and their actions earn the people's trust," Mr. Hoang said. The Thuan Tien Hamlet Veteran Civil Defense Team model has received commendations from the Provincial Police and annual awards from the Commune People's Committee.
Through simple yet meaningful actions, the soldiers of Uncle Ho's army demonstrate that, regardless of the circumstances, the qualities of a soldier shine through practical actions, maintaining peace, fostering trust, and building a safe and compassionate homeland.
