Could you tell me how different is the current Dong Ba market from the Dong Ba market on September 1, 2021 - when you came from the City Labor Federation (CFL) to become the Head of the Market Management Board?
When I left the City Labor Federation to return to Dong Ba market, my point of view was that I was working for the traders at Dong Ba market, so I would preserve and promote the good things. At the same time, I would accept the opinions and legitimate wishes of the traders to renovate, rectify and make it more beautiful. With that point of view, after nearly 2 years, "Dong Ba market, the common home of traders" has been changing every day.
It would not be very objective to tell all the changes. However, some changes can be seen immediately, such as Dong Ba market now has rows of shops, clear and clean walkways... The traders smile and greet customers, are more friendly, gentle and behave more friendly towards customers. Now most of the traders in the market no longer have the concept of "old noodles", and no longer have to "split three or four to pay" like in previous years... Especially, on the media and from tourists, the feedback about the market, if in the past it was all negative information, now it is mostly positive information... The above results are thanks to the attention, changes and positivity of the traders - the real owners of the market.
To have the change like now is certainly not easy. In the past 2 years, how have you overcome difficulties?
There are countless difficulties. But I think the biggest challenge for me was that when I came here, I did not understand much about small traders in the market. Another difficulty was that I determined that I did not come here to become a leader but always kept in mind that I was working for the people. Besides, I had to share the concept of working for hire with all the staff and workers of the unit.
Many traders at Dong Ba market feel that no market manager has ever received such respect and admiration from them as she has. What is the secret?
Such a feeling would certainly be unfair to those who came before. Because to have the market today, we must mention the efforts of many generations, especially those who laid the foundation for the market, such as: Ms. Lai, Ms. Tho, Ms. Nhi, Ms. Huong, Ms. Tra (Head of the Market Management Board of previous generations) and many deputy heads, civil servants and workers of the unit. Each person has a good way to develop Dong Ba market, I am just the one who synthesizes, inherits and implements according to the seniors.
Over the past time, I have been fortunate to receive the consensus and love of the Management Board staff as well as the market traders. For that, I would like to thank the city leaders, traders, officials and market workers.
Back to September 1, 2021, when you decided to leave the City Labor Federation to return to Dong Ba market, did you consider it carefully? Why?
Ms. Hoang Thi Nhu Thanh was born in 1980 in Phong Hien commune, Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province. She has a Master's degree in Public Administration, a Bachelor's degree in Law, and a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Before becoming the Head of Dong Ba Market Management Board, Ms. Thanh was the Chairwoman of Thuan Thanh Ward People's Committee; Chairwoman of Hue City Labor Federation. |
During the discussion with the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee about me becoming the Head of the Dong Ba Market Management Board, I was really shocked. Because at that time I was a member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor; a member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Labor Federation and the Chairman of the City Labor Federation. I knew very well that being in charge of a public service unit, and a complex place like Dong Ba Market, I would encounter difficulties, but I still chose to return. This was my decision and no matter what, I have no regrets.
How did your years as a union official influence your current job as Head of Dong Ba Market Management Board?
The experience and lessons that I have gained from my years as a union officer are applied at Dong Ba market in terms of propaganda and mobilization work; talk goes hand in hand with action.
For the first time in the history of Dong Ba market, a trader has joined the Party. Could you please tell us why this happened and how the Party membership of traders has contributed to changing the market environment?
The reason comes from the actual operation of the Market Management Board, from the suggestion of the city leaders after I came here to take up the task, that we should or should not introduce some of the elite masses who are small traders doing business in the market to the Party... We considered a lot and finally came to the conclusion that it was very necessary. Because in reality, Dong Ba market at that time had many existing problems and the Party organization of the market really needed small traders who were Party members who dared to think, to speak, to do, to fight for the right, to work with the leaders of the Management Board to build and revive the market. In fact, in the past, Party members who were small traders had a voice and made great contributions to the change of the market.
How much of your expectations have the changes in Dong Ba Market met? And what are your next steps?
My expectations are very high, but the work done in the past time is still very small. In the coming time, with the attention of the People's Council and People's Committee of Hue City, the Market Management Board will continue to renovate the market in phase 2, and at the same time mobilize traders to socialize some more items. In addition, continue to maintain the market's movements such as: "3 no 2 yes" (no soliciting, no old noodles, no haggling, reputable, quality); "Dong Ba smile"; "Civilized and friendly are Dong Ba people" ...
What does being recognized as a prominent citizen mean to you? Does it create more pressure in your upcoming work?
This is a great honor and also a motivation for me to continue to contribute and grow. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation for the sentiments that the traders, officials and employees of the unit have accompanied and helped me to complete my tasks. I will continue to work hard to serve the people, not to disappoint their trust as well as the trust of the organization...
