Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo updated the death toll from Ebola in the country to 204 over the weekend, hours after the Red Cross announced that three volunteers had died from the disease. Meanwhile, Uganda also confirmed three new cases of Ebola.
According to a statement from Congo's Ministry of Health , 204 deaths have been recorded in three provinces of this vast Central African nation, among 867 suspected cases of Ebola.
The latest statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 22nd show that the number of deaths from Ebola in Congo is 177 out of 750 suspected cases.
The WHO has declared this highly contagious Ebola outbreak a global emergency.

Earlier, on May 23, the African Union's health agency warned that several other countries on the continent were at risk of being affected by the Ebola virus, in addition to Congo and Uganda.
"We have noted that many African countries are at risk due to the Ebola outbreak," said Jean Kaseya, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. He listed the African countries on the list as Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Amid the increasing risk of spread, the World Health Organization and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention have announced a $319 million Ebola response plan for six months across Africa. Of the total budget, $265 million is allocated to response efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, while $54 million will be dedicated to preparedness efforts in high-risk African countries.
