Hanoi FC's captain and striker, Nguyen Van Quyet, received a heavy penalty from the VFF Disciplinary Committee following an altercation with an assistant referee in Round 7 of the V-League 2023.

Besides being suspended for eight matches, Van Quyet also has to pay a fine of 40 million VND. The Disciplinary Committee based its decision on Clause 2(a) of Article 39 regarding physical assault, in the VFF Disciplinary Regulations. The Hanoi FC captain received the maximum penalty due to a past violation. In the 2016 V-League, Van Quyet pushed referee Hoang Pham Cong Khanh during the Hanoi – Khanh Hoa match in Round 4. At that time, he received a direct red card, was banned for five matches, and was removed from the Vietnam national team's training camp list.

In Round 7 of the V-League 2023, Hanoi lost to Binh Dinh 1-3 at Quy Nhon Stadium. After the match, Van Quyet confronted the referees and clashed with assistant referee Nguyen Le Nguyen Thanh. Standing nearby, the main referee Nguyen Manh Hai immediately showed a red card. Mr. Nguyen Thanh claimed that the Hanoi player elbowed him in the chest area, causing him difficulty breathing.

A day later, Van Quyet proactively called his assistant Nguyen Thanh to apologize, and also admitted his mistake through the media.

With this suspension, the reigning Vietnamese Golden Ball winner will miss seven V-League matches and one National Cup match. This is a major blow for Hanoi FC in the championship race, as the 32-year-old striker is their main goalscorer. Since the beginning of the season, Van Quyet has contributed six goals, ranking second in the individual scoring race in the V-League.

Besides Van Quyet, the VFF Disciplinary Committee fined four individuals from Binh Phuoc Club for shoving assistant referee Nguyen Van Luu after a goal was disallowed in the match against Hoa Binh in Round 3 of the 2023 First Division League. Accordingly, Coach Le Thanh Xuan was banned for four matches and fined 15 million VND. Players Vu Duc Duy and Tran Tan Tai were suspended for three matches and fined 10 million VND. Technical officer Khong Thanh Tu was banned from duty for five matches and fined 15 million VND.
