Dr. Phan Trong Hau, Head of the Department of Spinal Trauma and Orthopedics at the Orthopedic Trauma Institute (Military Central Hospital 108), stated that scoliosis is a condition that directly affects the physiological structure and shape of a child's body. Worryingly, many cases progress silently over a long period, making them easy for families to overlook.

Scoliosis should be diagnosed early to avoid spinal and thoracic deformities.

Many children come for examination when their spines are already noticeably deformed, their rib cages are misaligned, affecting their respiratory function and daily activities.
According to Dr. Hau, parents should pay special attention to taking their children for a check-up if they notice any signs of body deformities such as uneven shoulders, head tilted to one side, one shoulder blade protruding higher, uneven legs, hip misalignment, or disproportionate ribs.
Many cases of children wearing ill-fitting clothes or having an abnormal gait due to scoliosis go unchecked early.
Without timely intervention, scoliosis can worsen over time, causing spinal deformities, chest deformities, and affecting the development of the lungs and internal organs.
In severe cases, children are at risk of respiratory failure, reduced quality of life, and may require complex surgeries. Besides affecting physical health, the disease also causes many children to feel self-conscious and insecure in their studies and social interactions due to changes in their appearance.
"Early detection is crucial because many cases can be effectively managed if monitored and treated at the right time, reducing the risk of needing major surgery later," said a specialist in spinal trauma and orthopedics.
From May 18th to June 18th, the Central Military Hospital 108 is implementing a program offering free screening and surgical treatment for scoliosis and kyphosis in children under 18 years old.
Cases eligible for free screening include children under 18 years of age who have one or more suspected signs of scoliosis, such as:
Uneven shoulders; head tilted to one side; one shoulder blade higher than the other; clothes mismatched; one side of the body thinner than the other; uneven legs; one hip protruding; ribs asymmetrical.
Families can bring their children for examination at Spine Clinic 2.32, Outpatient Department C1-1A, Central Military Hospital 108, Hai Ba Trung Ward, Hanoi .
